Yesterday's task was to photograph and document a work that will be submitted to a juried show. They ask for a full image, naturally, and occasionally, a detail shot. I think the detail image should show the quilting and the array of printing techniques. But more importantly, it be a strong composition on its own.

Under the Needle

My Gammill is not in constant use, and it jumps into action when needed. I've got a small work for the members' show at Rochester Contemporary due in a month, and October is full of 'other'. So, best to get the queue taken down a few. No name yet, I'll have to live with it for that, perhaps.
 

Details

Entries to exhibitions often ask for details, particularly if it is fiber work. I contend that the image of that detail should be compositionally interesting, and show some facet of the work in the medium as well as the finishing. Above is all right, but doesn't show the color work of the piece. Below better.

 

Back to Longarming

It was a marathon longarm sprint. I got it set up Friday, and finished Monday evening. Yes, I was gone a day for welcoming the fall, and pleased that this step is finished. Tomorrow I'll trim it and add facings and sleeve. My deadline approaches for installing in October. 
 

Slow Going

. 

It'll take time and patience for this one, as the colors get switched out left and right. It would certainly be easier if I had the exact color, as now it takes me time to settle on what is at hand. What is enjoyable is following the gestural lines that I'd printed. Always the best road map!
 

Half Way Quilted

What I'm working on this weekend, and I never tire of quilting the line's I've made. I'm on a longarm Gammill, about 12' wide. 
 

Flip the Switch

I was still taking a drive around on the longarm, and today thought I might try without the regulated stitch. I like that better. And I love to draw the line. This might have to end up somewhere in the next quilt.

On the Machine

I say this to whoever will listen: I love to quilt the lines that I've drawn with dye. They might be from silkscreen, monoprint, or directly drawn with a thin pointed bottle. But accenting what is already there just feels like the right thing to quilt.

Quilting Time

Most of my day was taken with shipping supplies ahead of my classes at the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum in Golden, Colorado (October 13) and then on to Oregon after that. My after dinner task was quilting this little auction quilt for the Schweinfurth. I'll get it faced, sleeved and in the mail soon.

Around and About

My tenth in the Take Two series is under the quilting needle. With far too  many thread color changes, and lots of tightly spaced lines, this one is heavily quilted. I know the next work will be a reaction to this much stitch and I'll do a looser quilt. Less around, more about.

Topping 90

The list is long, and before I started crossing off any one thing, I installed the window air conditioner. At 90 degrees I knew that cool was in the basement, as well as this top to be quilted. Home, work, and growing list.

Form Follows Line

Adding the quilted stitch is always a joy when it's my fabric, my line, my piecing to follow. I've got a great two pieces of fabric with drawn line, shmooshed areas, and blobs. Just right to run my quilted line around and around.

Take Two, Two Sides

Couldn't wait to finish this, and can't figure why. Quilting was finished, and spent the morning sewing the facing and sleeve. The back has a soft commercial backing, so easy to sew by hand. Latest in the "Take Two" series, and I'm eager to pick another pair tomorrow.

Pin Basting

Straight pins are my tool for basting this quilt. I can pull then out quickly. It's 40 x 40 finished, and wool batting. I've started with the dark blue thread, will add in the light color next. Did I mention how I love to quilt the lines I've printed?

Time to Quilt

Using my domestic Bernina, the one I've been using since 1988, I'm running around the printed elements in the fabric. It's fun, mindless, and gets the job done.

On the Machine

I make one-yard sized whole-cloth quilts for function (like a couch quilt), for the small size (fits just right over a table), and for the person who wants a quilt in an affordable range. But, that one yard is a doozy.

Tryout Time

I don't normally try out patterns for the work, I just go at it. This is a sample. The next time, I'll be quilting for someone else, and must rein in my style of quilting. Also, I've taken a tip from Linda Visnaw and tried some overlapping lines. Might just work.
