Slow Start

I got a feel for how this room will work. A work table on wheels got a fast cuttin mat so that I could ready a curtain to stage my daughter's house. The studio needs proper attention, and lighting for certain, but the ease of moving in the space will be a great needed  change for working. 

 

It's a Start

Thursday I cut out and tore away the kitchen sink and cabinets that were in the studio. Yesterday the wonderful plumbers installed a new utility sink. Today I mixed 24 quarts of 8 colors for Monday's print class. I have a long way to go before it's smooth operation, but this is the start. 
 

It Fits!

Today was plumbers all day, so I worked around them clearing a path to swing the long arm into its new docking site. There is room for me to quilt despite that darn post, and I'm thrilled to have more space to move. I've also lined the wall with my design boards, and started clearing the mountain of boxes.
 

The Mess I'm In

I had a few hours before some minor surgery today, so trying to keep away from eating and drinking I found myself removed to the farthest corner of the house -- the studio. Main goal was to clear a path to the outer walls and prep to paint. This will take some great effort to turn into a workable, let alone nice, space.
 

Wonder Team

It was time to reassemble the long arm. Keep in mind that the bed is 12' wide. The wonderful duo from Delightful Quilting and Sewing, Ron and Joyce, spent the afternoon getting this machine in shape for it's new space. I'm so grateful to find this two who answered my call of 'help' and came to put it right.
 

The Before,and What's Ahead

The closing for my townhouse was today, and now the raw interior can be dealt with. I've floor to repair and rejuvenate, and need to turn the walls light. I'll be away for a couple of weeks, and that will give me time to dream up what I'll do to this to made the studio work. It will, you'll see.
 

Promise a Future

Today was the walk-through and look around before closing on this townhouse. It caught my attention because of the potential for a great work space and one that was home-based. It has a different vibe than my little cape coddie, but I'm ready to modernize, shed a few things, and redo a studio. 
 

Recon Missions

In between travels is a project that promises rewards. But it will take time and effort. I'm getting ready to set up a new studio, but first comes dismantling the old one and shifting a lot of things around. Plus outfitting the joint. So, new lights, new walls, new everything. Reconnaissance for now. 
 

The Lineup

The trimmed square is on the left, the others are waiting for me to finish to get to them and assemble. Good to be in the studio, first in many days, and to see just how much heat I can take. 82 wasn't too bad, tomorrow is another story. Tonight I'll sew the facing and take in a movie -- whooo hooo.

Saturday morning I'll be a guest on Joe Cunningham's Quilt Freedom Workshop. Here's the studio wall piled with about 7 quilts to start. Might Just Take It

I'm looking at a space dedicated to just making textile art. Might just go for it. Gotta sleep on it though. 

 

At the Ready

Tonight I'll travel virtually to Essex, Vermont and the meeting of the Champlain Valley Quilt Guild. I'll have a lecture (way to many photos, I know) and a tour of the sewing side of the studio. The print side is reserved for my print classes! But the design wall is holding a half dozen works, all is ready to go. 

 

The Room Where it Happens

I've got an old Bernina atop my table for quick seams, a long design wall, and another Bernina for long sit-down seams. The pile under the table holds the fabric I've printed that I've deemed "special" to use for my own work. Pretty much where it all happens.
 

It Works No Matter What You've Got

Last week's 8 intrepid printers worked in a virtual print class. I asked them to set up a working studio, and the variety was broad. Some were rented spaces, some built specifically for printmaking, some had a table between two cars. All  prints were spectacular, so there goes the special space theory.

Company's Coming

Location shots are going to help me figure out what needs a revamp, a redo, or a pitch out. In the last three months there's been no company, but ZOOM will start visiting next week, so it's time to clean out for virtual visitors!

Piles of Fabric

Spring is here, but somehow I missed the "cleaning" part of the equation. Time for some rearranging. Like move one pile to the next spot. And this is not a current look, but from months ago.

Reordering

As I move through the corners of the studio and rearrange work stations, I've made changes. I turned to my design wall and took a hard look at the junk pinned up. Half got tossed, some made it back in a new arrangement. At least now there is some white space to think.

Turning a Corner

The new (to me) longarm is now in place and I'm ready to learn how to use it. This placement has forced me to move boxes, purge bins, settle up old bundles of "maybe-someday" to make room. We'll see how it goes, and what comes of it.

Snow Time Like the Present

I've taken to maximizing studio time as much as I can this month. It's paid off, with a few new pieces, an update for a few projects in need, and a good rhythm to "get up and get going". The warm weather can wait, I've work to do.

Snow Time for Working

The best indication of when it's time to get to work is when the work outside is over, and the only thing left is work inside. Hooray! A good hard frost, and now heading for the studio.
