Timeless Wendell

Wendell Castle, who passed away yesterday, was known throughout the world for his beautiful art and teaching us all how to live as an artist. I met him through his video on making a music stand, in 1974. That memory remains vivid, alive, timeless. Much like Wendell Castle.

Wendell Castle's sculpture from his current exhibition reminds me of the adage: if you'd want to highlight (no pun intended here) a shape, put a line around it. I've spent a few days adding thin lines around shapes, and it works.

Wendell Castle Retro

Tonight's visit to the Memorial Art Gallery was to see the Wendell Castle retrospective exhibit. I loved the early work from the late 50's, and was so surprised to see work done in 2017. There is a freshness to his work and monumentality. I mean, check out the shadow from this table. Even that is luscious.

The Power of a Drawn Line

Wendell Castle's new exhibition showcases his sketches and, in this case, a maquette for the sculpture as well. The University Gallery at RIT opened his show tonight, and the statement to draw, and draw a lot, did not go unnoticed.

Hidden Passion

Wendell Castle's music stand (collection Memorial Art Gallery) held his notes tonight as he sang Woody Guthrie songs. Sponsored by MAG, "Hidden Passions," had me wondering just what I would share. Publicly, that is.

Almost Legal Drinking Age

This strange and wonderful sculpture/bas relief by Wendell Castle is still where it was installed in the World Headquarters for Bausch & Lomb, now the Legacy Tower, twenty years ago. The painted panels are recessed, and the chain-sawn "frame" is coated with a blistery lacquer. Perhaps when the missing lights are lit, it will leave adolescence and be ready to belt one down.

Family Matters

Wendell Castle's sculpture at the sculpture garden at the Memorial Art Gallery is called "Unicorn Family" and I think its just splendid with a coat of rain.
