Doesn't Cut It -- Yet

You know that I toss fabric up on the design wall to see how it behaves with others. This one isn't there, and that's all right. Not every thing has to work, and lord knows I've hundreds more to choose. This photo is a great way to know it's not a good match, and it's the start of the process for design work.
 

Charlie's Quilt

I've finished Charlie's quilt, as well as a good portion of Jane Eyre (the Timothy Dalton version) that helped me sew the facing and sleeve. Now it's time to design and fabricate the portrait that is due Monday. I'll have progress soon.

 

Hudson River Valley Workshops

Line Up

The Columns workshop deals with how to use -- to advantage -- the artist made fabric we all love. It helps to pull out a string of pieces that might work together. I look for a variety of graphics as well as a good range in value. Color can take a back seat as the value and scale matter more to me. 
 

Wish You Could See

In two days for the Make It and Break It workshop, wonderful compositions emerged. And they were grand scale, and made from printed (by the artist) fabrics. Just so happy to see the fabrics used in a creative and vibrant way. Thanks to my class, I had such a great time, and miss you already.
 

Three With Disagreements

A query from someone who bought these three fabrics was -- would they work together? Now, I can use most anything, but these three were not singing well together. I've suggested other combos by knocking out the forefront blue, and replacing the brown/natural with another. A better set for the buyer.
 

It's a Start

Wool batting was delivered. Now I've got the top started. It'll have to wait till I return from my travels for more quilting, but at least it's a start. And I've got something to return to.

Down the Home Stretch

It's late at night, but that excited feeling of wanting to wake and finish this construction phase has taken hold. I've done enough moving and shaping, so now I can assemble this.

Clarification

I've got the largest elements moving around, and trying to calm down the background. Snow, ice, rotten weather means more time in the studio.

Here's The Foam Roller

People ask me what kind of roller I use to print. I'll be at the Schweinfurth next week, and if you're joining me (or are just wondering) this is the little foam roller I like to use for various techniques in printing thickened dye on fabric. They're hi density, not the cheap ones, and slip on the holder.

Visit to Marcia Derse

We ended our class today to visit Marcia Derse's studio on Whidbey Island, Washington to have an impromptu tour and lecture about how she designs her splendid art made fabric. It was such a very special look at her take on collage, mark making, and decisions on color pallet. A most gracious host. Thank you, Marcia!

Compass Points

QSDS has a challenge that asks for 4 small 12x12 works based on the theme "Points of the Compass" (at least that's how I remember it) and these will get popped in the mail to be part of this summer's gallery. I'll be at QSDS in 2019, so these will be my standin till then.

Take TWO Workshop in April

Progress on the next in the "Take Two" series. And progress at finding a time and place to have a workshop composing with just two fabrics. Join me April 19th at Buckland Park in Brighton (Rochester) for a day of composing with JUST TWO fabrics. Wilder artist made fabric encouraged.
