The Definitive Mark

Finish Line

The weather was perfect for our week, and we made this clothesline work like mad on the last days. I love what the shadow forms become on the ground. And yes, I did caution everyone not to let their prints bake in the sun longer than to 'dry' as textile art is damaged with sun exposure. Still, nice to have this line.
 

Taking Over

Second day of the print workshop sand the class is using every inch of space for our printing use. Wall, outside parking spots, even the front of the refrigerator. We have printing to do, and gosh, we're going to do that! Tomorow we have a bit of a field day after class, and then more to do inbetween. 
 

QBL 2026 Indepent Print Studio

I'll be at Quilting By the Lake THIS summer from July 25 to August 1!  Independent Studio workspace is an opportunity to stretch and work in depth with students for the week. The class is not yet up on the website for the Schweinfurth, but you can call and register. Wow! I'm so excited. 
 

Print With Me May or June

Two places with two spots each are open for you and a friend (new or old) to print on fabric. May 29-31 is at the Schweinfurth Art Center for "Just Silkscreens" and then June 15-19 I'll be in Coupeville, Washington at the PNWAS of Pacific Northwest Art School for a week of printing wild. Taking Them Along

For a printing workshop, I like to have washed examples of the techniques we'll be using. So, half of these are for that, and the other will be for sale. Lucky if you are in the retreat at Alegre or in the audience at the North Suburban Needle Arts Guild near Chicago. Those are my next visits, can't wait.
 

Many Moons

I'd have a hard time trying to capture tonight's full Snow Moon through this thick cloudy night. But I've got better -- a whole slew of moons printed on 7 ounce painter's canvas. I love the lightweight of this and use it for covering chair cushions. I plan to make a bag (!!) for the Allegre retreat, for auction. 
 

Surprise Posting

 I was surprised to see my "In the Weeds" quilt show up on Instagram to highlight a workshop June 15-19  for the Pacific Northwest Art School in Coupeville, Washington. I love teaching there, and I'm thinking that I need to emphasize printing for wearables because we're going big and bold, of course!

Results Double Time

Finished the two prints that started out the same, and ended up differently. It's also the end of a week with Australian printers who will be in my workshop this April in Melbourne at the Convention. So much fun this week with this lovely group. Now for a nightcap and sleep. Thank you printers!
 

Final Print Day

What a great week to spend printing and exploring techniques for using thickened dye. I love a virtual winter class to break the long darkness of the winter. Thank you all my glorious printers from England to California. Keep printing, and use that glorious fabric that you've made. 

Before the Wash, After the Wash

For a demonstration of what to expect after washout, this printed piece is left unwashed (left) and washed (right). What you see before washing is pretty much what to expect after washing, with a slightly lighter set of colors. Wet dye is always darker, and not the final color, but dry is likely to be the same.
 

Out of the Wash

Two days ago I posted a photo detailing the color as wet thickened dye. I knew that the washed color would be lighter  it always is) and also factored in the age of the mixed dye (about two months). No big surprise to see how pastel it became. I like it, can use it, but it'll be for sale first at Art Quilt Tahoe.
 

Left on the Design Wall

It's always waiting for me, that last bit to finish. I've got most of this together and if I can haul my sorry self out to Studio 301 tomorrow, I'll get it ready to quilt. Then I need to turn my attention to two smaller projects and some administrative tasks. Not in that order though. 
 

The Fabric Workshop and Museum

The recently expired exhibition "Soft Cover" at The Fabric Workshop and Museum had a bed dressed in linen sheets on which were printed images of nuclear bombs and script for how to end life on earth. It was the most striking object in the exhibition, and most thought provoking. Especially for these times.
 

Pillow Talk

A friend requested some pillows, so I've started this set. They take a bit of time, as I'll print one side, let set and dry, then flip to print the other. These are cotton with a side zip. 
 

Full Moon

 I should really highlight my entire patch of marvelous daylilies that were decimated by deer (I'll imagine it was a BUCK) but that would bring tears. Instead feast on these two prints using a soy wax screen. Think shirt, skirt, dress, or OK, a great frame for a kid's quilts. And the kid can be a grown-up. Happy full moon,

Taking a Bow

I'm heading to the opening of "Imprinted on Cloth" at the Schweinfurth Art Center this Saturday for the opening. Slight of Hand, on loan from a collector, will be shown along with work by Margaret Boys Wolf, Petra Fallaux, and Karen Schulz. Join us in Auburn, NY, May 31 from 4-6.

 

Botanical Prints

One of my favorite motifs is leaves. Cheri made a screen using soy wax and the print was delightful. The complexity of the resist in the drawn and painted leaf, has a quality of lithography in the mark that resulted from using the silkscreen. She has a gift for drawing an expressive line in her work.

 

I'm Keeping This

A demo print, this is a print with a soy wax screen, where the wax is put on the screen instead of on the fabric. I love making a motif that has a spine -- it means that I can attach the motif in a line and imply a large screen or a large image. I'll have to make more.

We Are Printing!

A group of textile artists asked me to offer a print class in Fall River, Massachusetts, in Pro Chem's workspace. We ran through a boat load of techniques, and I KNOW there is water not far away. There's more to do tomorrow, and I'm so looking forward to it.
