Charming Quilt Show

Today I had a chance to see the exhibit that will be on view this summer at The Cleveland House Museum in Naples, New York. It was a fact finding mission for my talk this Saturday at 1 pm. Along with facts, I found charm. The detail is from a fifth grade class bicentennial project, now 50 years old.

 

Sashing

Glass art uses leading connections as a design element. Traditional quilts often use sashing between blocks to strengthen design by repetition and grid.  I've used blocks devoid of sashing, but in a grid, allowing the shapes to cross and flow, or stop and form edges. This ceiling is from the downtown library. Below, an example of sashing from the collection of the New England Quilt Museum.

 

Busman't Holiday

A trip to a nearby town and lovely antique store on the weekend is where I found this early quilt. It's in good shape, is hand quilted, and has a simple patchwork pattern. but Most of all, I love the use of red and white throughout. A keeper to use.
 

Nine Patch From the Blob

I got nine squares from my blob, and just about nothing left over. I've spun these blocks every which way, but still think they're not the best. I blame the fabric choice. Still better than the blob. Stay tuned.
 

Classics

I've been given five quilts that need new homes. Part of the process is to identify and document the works. This one is similar to Crosses and Losses, or Anvil, and seems to be its own pattern, according to my friend Nancy. I'll bundle them up, then find where to sell them. Meanwhile, it's nice to look at them up close.
