Video for the Monkies

Crafty Monkies has asked me to be a part of a project that involves 6 fiber artists. We were to film our design and execution of three blocks that will be joined and shown at some future date. My filming was in January, but one of the parts needed reshooting, so I stepped back in time and did my part.

Another day of fooling with cameras and sound to get the stage set for videos on how I work on a project. This is for Crafty Monkies, and will air mid-year. But first, I need to get the set nailed. Or printed, you might say.

Print the Table

One technique we'll do next week in Virtual Print class is to work with silkscreens. Here is what call "print the table" which lets you mess up a print image before you capture it in fabric. The fun part of printing is just this kind of thing.

Mixing Dyes for Printing

Getting ready to print this week. So here's how I very unscientifically set up my dyes. My typical pallet is two reds, two yellows, two blues, black and chartreuse. That'll do just about all the range I need. For Virtual Print, the class makes up the dyes; I get to relax.

Making Thickened Part of Thickened Dye

I'm getting ready to make the "thick" part of thickened dye that I use to print. Here's a go at how I mix it and get ready. I'm adding about 4 cups of Pro Print Paste from Pro Chemical and Dye to one gallon of warm water. And yes, I need a haircut.

How I Soda Soak Fabric

When I teach printing fabric, I ask that students come with their fabric soda soaked and ready to print. Here's a three minute take on how I get my fabric ready for printing with thickened dyes.

Drawing a Line with Thickened Dye

Lines are always so diverse in quiltmaking. Pieced line, quilted, line, couched line, bias tape line, raw edge line. Here I just take a squirt bottle filled with dye and print paste to thicken, and draw. Immediate line.

Quilting a Baby Quilt

You always need a quilt, right? Thought I'd gift a little quilt for my baby daughter who will be 29 tomorrow. Here are 50 seconds of the quilting action on my longarm.

Line Drawing

Another in my surface design videos to how how I use a squirt bottle to draw a line. I'm drawing on the monoprint I pulled on another video. I'm due to print more some day soon, and perhaps I'll capture more of this fun stuff.

Monoprinting to Music

Printing from the table is easy because I've covered it with plastic. I'll use thickened dye spread around and then use something to make a mark. I only get one print from this method, but that's the point -- a one of a kind print.

Screen Printing Video

Now that we've all attached our eyeballs to screens, here a short short of me printing with a silkscreen with a newspaper resist. It's fun. I''m using thickened dye on a cotton fabric that has been treated with soda ash. I teach this, and might be persuaded to try this in an online class. Why not?
