Food for the Soul

My mother said "flowers are food for the soul." I'd amend that to include art. This lovely piece is from Judy Gohringer. Now it's part of my office and constant inspiration.

Timeless Wendell

Wendell Castle, who passed away yesterday, was known throughout the world for his beautiful art and teaching us all how to live as an artist. I met him through his video on making a music stand, in 1974. That memory remains vivid, alive, timeless. Much like Wendell Castle.

Sign of theMonth

My tax bill just arrived this week and my plan is to pay the whole blob of it. Then I just have to work on the Art part of life.

Being 16 Again

Jewett House was a scholarship dorm at Chautuaqua Institution when I was 16. That was an enlightening summer, this was home base, my room on the third floor. I was a student in the painting school. Now I am returning (as part of Quilting Around Chautauqua) to see my old haunts and sell painted fabric. Ha.

Sol Lewitt Au Natural?

See, even nature can't avoid that "from the vortex" feeling you get from an installation of Sol Lewitt's work. And this reminds me -- time to SPRAY FOR DEER!

Sol LeWitt last year

Seen at Mass Moca, this installation work from Sol LeWitt's designs is far and away crazy. I loved the show, we saw it a year ago, and it still is a great memory for line, color, fun, and he knew how to write some grand instructions. If there is an installation near you, you are lucky.

Exhibit Design

At the art festival yesterday here in Rochester, was a very clever use of stretched canvas with a field of paint to highlight snazzy jewelry. I love the black and white of these gals as well. Sorry I did not catch the artist's name.

At the Clothesline Art Festival

Clothesline has been an annual event in Rochester, New York for the last 53 years. Back in the 80s I had a booth and sold quilts. It still has a great saturation of well made and high end craft as well as very good art. Never disappointed with what is there. This fiber work is by Raphaela McCormack who currently has an exhibit at Nazareth College. Check her out.

Bas Relief

Christian Petersen was the sculptor for this lovely mural, a detail is show here. Vets are working on a cat. Very strong line, and yet soft and quiet. It is an endearing symbol for the vet shool at Iowa State University.

Gone But Not Down

The exhibit of my work is officially finished, but you can peek in the window and still see the works hanging. Take down will have to wait for me to get to it. Remembering opening night and in the foreground is Joan Lyons. An icon before I knew what that meant.

Using Light

Set between the Portrait Gallery and the American Museum, this atrium (?) has the most glorious light. It is soft, hushed almost, and still. There is a wonderful grid of transluscent material to the undulating roof. We had lunch here. And we spoke quietly.

Portraits, or Single Subject Focus

In my work, I like to have a single focus, or lets say portrait, for lack of a better description. Ben Franklin, seen here in tones of white and brown, has plenty of definition. And it is a handsome piece of marble, too.

Mom as Artist

Got the family to the exhibition today (at last). Lots of discussion on the titles from my editors and wordsmiths. Made notes for future works.

Being Decisive

Try making a free form shape, then try it really big. These are a portion from Matisse's work seen in Gronigen, The Netherlands at their funky art museum. We would have a hard time just finding these large pieces of paper and harder still to do what he could do so well.

Little Legs

I love the red wall, all at angles, behind these fan people. Seen in Groningen, The Netherlands, at (where else) the art gallery. It's the legs that get me.
