In the Garden Vicki's Version

Vickie Coykendall used my pattern "In the Garden" to make this quilt years ago. It was the first thing spotted at the Genesee Valley Quilt Show. When I spoke with Vickie, we agreed that although it was originally a raffle quilt, why not again. What do you say? Here is the original. Pattern on my website.

One from the Elite Taiwanese Quilt Collection caught my eye last week. I've featured a rose in a quilt that I developed into a paper-pieced pattern -- "In the Garden". This one is titled "The Wind Lifts Water, Petals Flutter" by YinPing Tuan. It's a good style between absolute realism and abstraction. 

 

In the Garden

More than a dozen years ago I drafted this pattern for a paper pieced raffle quilt. That quilt was about 8' square, this is about 5' square. I no longer use paper piecing for quilt design, but those who do love this effect. I've added the pattern to my website store. If that's your thing, you might like "In the Garden".

 

What a Difference a Year Makes

Last year when I was at Quilt North Quilters Guild I taught the "In the Garden" pattern. Tonight, after my lecture, was show and tell. And this finished top showed up. One of the best I've seen, and a delight. When it is quilted, it will be spectacular. 

Garden Party

The first class up on Thursday at the Vermont Quilt Festival is this quilt pattern that I will teach. I've  paper  pieced it, and used a bit of every kind of fabric. But the red with white polka dot is what gives it its sparkle. There is still room in the class, which is great. More relaxing for me!

In the Garden with a New Colorway

Thought I would practice my skill at paper piecing and choose a new color set for my In the Garden quilt. I'll be teaching this on my first day at the Vermont Quilt Festival. There's still room, I believe. You can visit the VQF site and check out the show.

Garden Party in Vermont June 25

Gardens intrigue me. I am swell in designing two dimensions, but outdoors in boundless space, a garden is a challenge. This detail of "In the Garden Party" is part of the first workshop I'll be teaching at the Vermont Quilt Festival June 25. (Registration closes June 1.) Come play in my garden.

Well Planted Garden

My apology for not remembering this woman's name. At the lecture on Wednesday night in Concord Massachusetts, she showed the top finished from my "In the Garden" class at the Vermont Quilt Festival in 2012. Her top is as lovely as she is. (I'll be back in Vermont in 2015.)

Strong Light of Day

Sherri is working on her "In the Garden" block. I love all the color and the flood of sunlight. It was a spectacular day and a terrific group of women. And the perfect "zen" room of calm. Yes -- calm and paper piecing at the same time. Imagine that.

Left Handed Quilter's Work

Teresa Raymond Levine, the "Left Handed Lady Quilting" bought my pattern at Chautauqua and the "In the Garden" is now on the longarm getting quilted. Looks lovely, and thanks to Anne for snapping the pic of the quilt (and more importantly, knowing it was my pattern!).

In the Garden, for Amherst

This weekend I will be selling fabric, and a just this pattern for my "In the Garden" quilt. I teach this paper pieced quilt, and I bring this along to show it off. It is unusual for me, as my work is more abstract, but I do love that square in a square.
