The Start of the Blob

This demo was started in the last Make It & Break It workshop. The color and graphics I find compelling, so I'll try to finish this before our "reunion" next month. And we'll see how it works out. I'll be teaching this workshop at QSDS in Columbus, Ohio in person (!) June 4-5. Maybe you want to be there, too.
 

What a Difference a Year Makes

This time last year I was teaching at QSDS in Columbus, Ohio.  There is no retreat this year, and memories will have to hold till next year. Can't have imagined!

It Came Home to Me

Part of the QSDS challenge was Marla Hattabaugh's little work. I took a shine to this one, bought it, an it finally made its way to my doorstep. When I'm back from my Northwest trip I'll find a handing rod and a place to put it. Thanks, Marla!

Not a Ride-By

QSDS is a stone's throw from the Columbus Art Museum, and a terrific collection of works that engage. A week ago I caught myself  staring at this work "Ride by Terror" by James Baare Turnbull, painted in 1941, when he was 32. Yes, hooded men with guns. And in 1941.

Up in Flames

The spectacle of a fiery red sunset isn't justly captured here. At QSDS, my base camp for two weeks, the workshops ended with a true midwestern red sky that was reflected in the glass of buildings surrounding the CCAD campus.

Parting Shot

Before our room returns to its clean state, I took a backward glance at the riot of color and pattern we had on the tables and the walls. We meant to make only sketches this week, but couldn't resist making finished pieces. Ok, can do.

Sometimes There's Quiet

Given space, time, and motive one can do wonderful things. This was the view from my class today at QSDS. One more day to spend with creative minds.

Today Was Red Day

Our group photo was in shades of red. My QSDS class is held on the campus of the Columbus College of Art and Design and my room is a fabulous amount of space for each person to spread out to work, complete with a large design wall. I couldn't ask for more.

Ready to Flood

The first prints are set down in our spare drying room for the Glorious Prints class at QSDS in Columbus, Ohio. Just the first day and we are almost at capacity. There will be some serious clothesline hanging tomorrow.

In the Meantime, In Between Time

This is about 2' x 2'. I'm getting a few smaller works in the queue to take when I teach at QSDS this June. I've planned a great week of "Design Camp" where we start with small works and work into larger, more complex ones. So, this is starting small. Well, medium.

Improv Sketches

I'll be taking  a few small works on the road, or sending to auction. So, I've leftover bits to assemble, cut apart, reassemble, recombine. Sill, oh. You wets?

Can't make of this exercise in black, perched high above, in silhouette, two clothed figures with exaggerated costumes. The work of Ruben and Isobel Toledo is from their installation at the Columbus Museum of Art. Worth the visit, if nothing else, than to see these figures.

One Last Look at QSDS

We made work so quickly in my two day class, I  was hardly able to get a pic of the final pieces. Larry's work -- large and intricate -- were like the others in the class. Hope I got a shot of those, too. Maybe they'll send me a photo when they're done.

Yesterday at Columbus Museum

A Maya Lin sculpture made of pressed board appeared like top sheet about to land on your bed. With a Helen Frankenthaler work in the background, all the landscapes you needed were before you.

Time to Think

Space, light, time. That's what you need. Oh, and a big design wall.

Quick Walk Around

A "walk around "is just shorthand for an impromptu look at what the class is doing, a bit of examining an explaining, and a way to compare notes. Ellen has the spotlight, and I'm happy to hear her viewpoint.

Homework for Next Week

QSDS is next week, and I'll be teaching all design all day. I'm taking time to do a dry run on some ideas, and consequently, warm up my improv skills. Still room in the class -- come join us!

Two Feet Square

If I told you this was 5 feet square, you'd believe me. But it is a 2' x 2' work to send on to QSDS for their quilt show in Columbus. Big is always more appealing for me, but I experiment when I've got to make small. So that's good.

Doin My Homework

I'm warming up with an exercise I'll show next week for a class in Arizona. It will also be a part of my class in June at the Quilt Surface Design Symposium in Columbus, Ohio. The play's the thing, you know.
