Independent Studio in Surface Design

 

Independent Studio! In Surface Design, no less, so that means you do your own work, but with needed technical and design guidence when you need that, for a week in July 27 - 31. We'll meet for discussions, motifs, and motives. All in a great space and a solid retreat with Quiltng by the Lake. Come on aboard.

QBL Visits Schweinfurth

I got the chance to return to the Schweinfurth Art Center and see the exhibit that featured my work alongside three other surface designers -- Petra Fallaux, Margaret Boys Wolf, and Karen Schulz. The Quilting By the Lake students (all astute, kind, fun) were there as the treat for the night. 

Imprinted on Cloth

Tonight was the opening of the Schweinfurth Art Center's exhibition with four surface designers -- Petra Fallaux, Karen Schulz, Margaret Boys Wolf, and me. It is a lovely look at rich  color applied to fabric, unique voices and motifs, and a wonderful statement on current surface design in fiber work. Go see!
 

Your Invited Saturday

Drinks are on the house, er, the Schweinfurth Art Center. It should be a wonderful set of works who share the art of printing on fabric. They may even have cookies, too. 
 

Surface Design Schweifurth

 

Yesterday was Beyond the Surface at Schweinfurth Art Center. Two artists' work; first Krystle Lemonias who portarys domestic work of caregivers for it's content, second Gerri Spilka's work in printed and painted fabric held me for the dynamic shape and color. Both exciting, all worth the trip.

Details tell a lot, and I often take them in case I enter the work in an exhibition that is juried. I try to show the quilting, but also the printing complexity. Plus, they make a good little composition. 
 

Available Light

And they're off! We were intrepid, that's for sure. Starting with Dark, in the Dark, and working with what we had, we made a good day of it. Yes, the heat did come back, as well as the electric, but not till the end of our day. No matter, tomorrow we're ready!
 

Surface Design Award

The Schweinfurth's "Quilts=Art=Quilts"  exhibition awarded July Hooworth's Adventure Journal #6: Siberian Autumn the Surface Design award. It is monoprinted, stamped, and discharged cotton. I got to spend time with her last summer at QSDS. Fine way to print, for sure.
 

The Plot Thickens

I've added a bit to this, but still not set with the major elements. Oh, well, not like I'm going anywhere. And it's raining, so I'm in the studio moving fabric around.
 

Reveal

 Todat featured work from the print class, five days of 8 women printing, each a different style and hand. So fun to watch, and learn. My students offered me information, fed me corrections, and gave freely to each other. A treat to spend a week with them all. Thank you my Printers!

Line Drawing

Another in my surface design videos to how how I use a squirt bottle to draw a line. I'm drawing on the monoprint I pulled on another video. I'm due to print more some day soon, and perhaps I'll capture more of this fun stuff.

National Textile Day

Mummies Collide is one where I was just getting my chops in surface design and experimentation. I still think this is willful. Might have to get it out of hiding and hang it back up. Happy National Textile Day.

Nearing the End of the Slog

I've soda soaked about 150+ yards of labeled cotton for the upcoming year's classes. My April 2-3 printing class with the Genesee Valley Quilt Club (a few seats are available) is the only class which will have the fabric supplied by moi. I'm ready to end this task.

Easy Does It

Students in my printing classes are asked to "soda-soak" their fabric before they get to class. My short cut -- bucket of soda ash solution with 2 gallons and about 4 yards soaks for 15 minutes. Ring and drop in second tub to drain. Next day, hang damp. No drip! Check where I'll be this year for printing https://www.patpauly.com/calendar  which is practically everywhere.

Close Inspection

Last week's printing class took a break and got a look at the Quilts=Art=Quilts show upstairs of our studio at Schweinfurth. Seeing printed, dyed, reworked fabric used so creatively was inspirational. Being fluent in the techniques used in surface design is a plus in understanding this medium.

Elbow Room

I ask my students to have two goals. The first is to print as many pieces of fabric as they can. The second is to make a good print. What helps us out is having enough space and adequate equipment to make this happen. We've got that covered this week; we've got that extra elbow room.

Quartet of Technique

Gerri Spilka's talk included recent works that use various surface design techniques. I was intrigued with the effects from direct painting with thickened dye. The tools she uses are so different (though familiar) from what I use, with surprisingly fresh results. I look forward to seeing more.

Tampa's Surface Designers

I was lucky to get a ride to the Tampa Bay Surface Design Guild's meeting tonight, and met a graduate of Jane Dunnewold's class, Diane, who had this multilayered piece to show us. It doesn't show how spectacular the work is in this photo, but look for it in Houston later this year.

Take TWO Workshop in April

Progress on the next in the "Take Two" series. And progress at finding a time and place to have a workshop composing with just two fabrics. Join me April 19th at Buckland Park in Brighton (Rochester) for a day of composing with JUST TWO fabrics. Wilder artist made fabric encouraged.

Winter Starkness

I've got a yen for something zen. Something just one color and white. These just came off the print table a day ago, and I've shoved aside other contenders. Must be the outside that matches these. I'll add a clue, but don't expect two too often.
