Slash and Burn on a Cool Day

A hint of fall cool came to the class "Slash and Burn" today with the Marellus Modern Quilt Club. The best group to zip through adding a 'window' in the composition (the key to figuring out how to add sections together, I might add) they were also fun, dedicated, and open to my many demands. Thank you, Marcellus.

Slash and Burn North of the Border

For today's class in Slash and Burn, we worked like the dickens, but didn't manage to get the entire top finished. That said, a lot was learned, tried, and discovered. I had fun, and I think the group agreed. A lovely and welcoming group of women at the Muenster retreat.

Easy Landing

I've a few spots in my Cape Coddie that are large enough to hang my work. Here is how the latest finished out, and you can get a sense of the scale from what surrounds it. I've been keeping these last few squares to 40" just as a challenge.

Design Wall Working

The design walls are so handy to try out combinations of those two fabrics. I've cut, added, shifted, lined up a bit, and joined. May not keep this draft, but that's what the wall is all about.

At the Starting Gate

Two printed pieces I've pulled to do my next work. They are interesting in themselves, but let's see if I can't slash and burn these into something more.

Try Again

Another iteration. Something that happens a lot on this wall. But not for long.

Settling For This

After cutting and moving these parts around, I've settled on this. Now it's off to quilt the final. Mind you, it's a warm up for the next work. This is just me getting started.

A Day at the Design Wall

It's time to try variations with the blocks that have developed. Or maybe tomorrow I'll cut it up more.  Think it best to sleep on it.

Cleaning Up

This basket of scraps was to be tossed, then I thought better. It'd be a good exercise to sew them and 'slash and burn' a bit. If I'm not partial to the fabric, then there's no loss in cutting them up. Now I can play with design.

Happy 40th Maine Quilts!

Pat Delaney's quilt hangs to the left of mine at the entrance to the Maine Quilt Festival. Just a couple of flights getting here, I'm now in Augusta and ready to go. Tomorrow we'll be slashing and burning.

One Last Look at QSDS

We made work so quickly in my two day class, I  was hardly able to get a pic of the final pieces. Larry's work -- large and intricate -- were like the others in the class. Hope I got a shot of those, too. Maybe they'll send me a photo when they're done.

On The Wall

I save out choice fabrics from my dye/paint/screen/discharge days. This bunch seemed like it ought to be used. So, there. I cut into them, and have channeled the mantra from my "Slash and Burn" class -- don't think, just cut.

Ann Arbor Lineup

My lecture with the Ann Arbor Quilt Guild today ended with a show and tell from yesterday's Slash and Burn class. Still pinned to the design walls, these compositions show the range of work we did. These were all accomplished quilters, and the atmosphere we had was just wonderful.

Room to Breathe

It is unusual to have such a grand room to work. Lots of light, lights of wall space, plenty of room to spread out. No wonder that we accomplished so much is such a short time. It was a wonderful day to be with the Parksville Quilt House Quilters Guild in B.C.

Great Slashers

If you were in this class today you would know what I mean when I say we had a fine time composing with Slash and Burn. Seems like the projects were getting put away, and we wish we had more time, but really, we worked hard! Thanks, it was fun.

Noteable Millie

A constant note-taker, Millie dove right in to "Slash and Burn" today. Now, those bits of pieces are not arranged and in their place just yet, but there is plenty of head start to make a strong composition. Great fun to have you in the three days.

Strip Sets for Sunny California

For my class this coming weekend in Albany, California, I ask participants to sew two strip sets. Now, I have some homework as well. Here is the one set of the "same" fabrics.

Northern Star Quilters Workshop

Meg, on the left, had a wonderful color palette from very graphic fabrics that made her design modern from the get-go. Jane, on the right, is running out of room on the design board. Jane graduated from the town where I now live; it was a nice time remembering.

Different and the Same

When I teach my "Slash and Burn" class, I ask that people bring in two strip sets. One should be a bit wild with different fabrics, one a bit tame, with all of the same quality. I made these but will cut them up during the class. Then I will just have to do it again. Sigh.

Slash and Burn Vermont Style
