Time Suspended

The Australia trip was a long slog through four airports. The last flight was 17 hours in the air. So, this posting is a placeholder for that 30 hour time delay from start to finish. All went well, got lucky with a whole row to myself, and managed to stay sane. I've a day to explore tomorrow, then the fun ramps up.

Lotusland Goes on a Trip

My second offering for exhibit is Lotusland. Here's one of my large walls at home to display my works. This is packed and ready to roll out Saturday so I can land Monday morning in Melbourne for the Australasian Quilt Convention. Lotusland will get to see everyone, I'll be somewhere in class.
 

Why We Need Guest Rooms

My guest room is off my kitchen, much like my grandmother's bedroom I remember from the 50s. My office too, and it's the heart of administration. It affords me a landing place for packing -- this time for Melbourne, Australia and the AQC in April. Exhibition, workshop, and lecture make for full cases.

 

Results Double Time

Finished the two prints that started out the same, and ended up differently. It's also the end of a week with Australian printers who will be in my workshop this April in Melbourne at the Convention. So much fun this week with this lovely group. Now for a nightcap and sleep. Thank you printers!
 

Double Your Pleasure

Intrepid Australians are in my online workshop this week (they start very early, I start very late) and we've taken on the print double prints, finish each in a different way. My start is above, and for that I've used a silkscreen with a soywax drawing on the back. Part two tomorrow.

 

Australian Time

I'll be teaching 'Design Camp' in the Australasian Quilt Convention in April, 2026. This winter I'm offering an online class for those who are registered in my AQC class. Few spots are left, and hey, they are early morning Monday to Friday. What fun! Oh, see my website for details.

 

Fulll Moon for November

Circles are a common motif in print class, and this fit this month's supermoon. I'm in the thick of printing workshop, and looking forward to AQT next year. Between those dates I'll be teaching a bunch of places, most notably in Australia (for sewing and design) on online for printing. Special class online printing for Australia. I'm Missing Fun

I had looked for a pic in the camera roll only to stumble on this group of Queensland Quilters. This is so much a part of what I do -- meet so many great people -- where we spend a day or two forgetting the world's worries, getting immersed in design, art, color. Whatever. Just a wonderful memory.

Moonrise Over Sydney

Facebook and Instagram are full of landscape shots from vacationers. My moonrise landscape is a detail of my Three Sisters work, with cloud forming over the valley. I'd like to think of the moon as this red. The Wolf moon.

RIght Side Up

I was reminded that I've returned to and upstate New York fall from leaving Australia's spring. These eucalyptus plants, for example, left an impression of the wild, strange forms I saw left and right. Those with me had to slow down and look as well. I've not forgotten the kind beauty I saw.

Being Pear Shaped

This extra large group of pears (George Baldessin's "Pear -- version number 2") on the grounds of the National Art Gallery of Australia led me to think about shape. I'm more an apple, though I'd like to be more a banana. Suffice to say my month away had me return in the same shape.

Touching Down

The 13 hour flight from Brisbane landed at dawn in Los Angeles. My stay in Australia over, it's time to reflect, remember, and express my gratitude to my new friends for all the time they spent making this visit memorable .

Memorial to the Dead

200 hollowed out tree sections represent aboriginals who fought for their country, one for each year of Australia's bicentennial. Installed in the late 80s in the National Gallery in Canberra, this was a moving and dynamic work.

Design Time

Part of the Improv class was, well, improving. Sandra works at the technique of adding, then dividing fabric apart to remix and reconstruct into designs. This class with the Canberra Quilters has us all watching what would come of this different method of piecing. I say all good.

Visit to National Museum Art Gallery

A cloak by Issey Miyake stands in front of a Frank Stella work that is part of the highlight of abstraction in art, a topic near to my heart. More to see later in Canberra.

Gettin' Curvey Wit' Ya

The Queen Victoria Building (or commonly the QVB) is a Sydney landmark. Having been shined up and reno'd it's a great study in architectural details, not to mention a testament to curves among curves. Should you need to see how to loop and encircle, take a camera and take notes.

Intense Blue

Brett Whiteley, a renowned Australian artist, painted "The balcony 2" in 1975. It was his painting of his view from his residence in North Sydney that he used the deep ultramarine color and explain that it had "and obsessive, ecstasy-like effect upon my nervous system unlike any other color."

Walk Along the Beach

Coogee Beach was painted in 1888 by Tom Roberts. My walk to day from Sydney's Bondi Beach to Coogee had this spectacular view, almost untouched or maybe with a few more houses. Just stunning from any vista.

Green Patchwork Style

Passing by this building covered in green growth reminded me of that chia pet kinda thing -- add a medium and some green and you'll get hair. Great idea for cooling the building, especially since Sydney gets loads of warm.

It's Not Easy

I'm returning to my Geelong Week to talk briefly about Carol's piece that she made using three pieces of fabric. It was so dynamic, and not easy. It did grow and form and become. And I hope will be the start of many more explorations for her.
