The Art of the Book & Paper

The opening of the exhibition of "The Art of the Book & Paper" at the Rochester Public Library had over 100 works on view. I must return to get a better look, but here are a few snippets. It was fabulously overwhelming, and the craft and artistry is superb. More ideas for more ideas.
 

Small Business Saturday

I've got to wait to reveal the garments I'm making till after the December 8th show, so here's the diversion for Saturday. Since it was Small Business Saturday, a trip to the Rochester Art Supply was in order. And yes, I did grab some fabulous printed paper. The assortment is amazing.
 

It's All in Black and White

An intriguing look at life in a grand manner is this paper cutout from the 1700s (I think.) I love the stylization of the figures, the deer, the tree forms, and the horses. The coach has perspective; very clever this artist. From the Baltimore Art Museum's current exhibit on women's art in Europe 1400-1800.

 

Artists Voices

After I spoke, I relaxed to hear other artists in the Member's Exhibition at Rochester Contemporary Art Center. Rodrigo, an industrial designer from Mexico, now Rochester, waxed deliriously on his explorations with paper mache. He was excited to carry the tradition of "cardboarders". We were too.

 

Diversions

Like many of us, around December I was resigned to staying put, and sought something simple just for fun. Enter a Susan Purney Mark online class! So, I've started working on my paper for making books. And those clotheslines in the studio sure come in handy. Now to fold and cut.
 

Paper as Fabric

A stop at the Bevier Gallery today and quick look at "gowns" student made in the CIAS Foundations class at RIT.  I wasn't able to get up close, but even from afar could see paper behaving like fabric.

Busted

Saw this at the antiques fair. Shaping stiff paper into a body form is intriguing. And that could be my figure, too. Should have gotten this for me!
