How It's Done Well

Ellen Meeker's work Chairs from the Quilts=Art=Quilts exhibition amazed me. The composition, the subject matter, but more importantly, the exquisite detail and construction difficulty was superb. I'll put her statement below to show how she properly explained this work (and not her entire life). 

 

Where It Was

I went back to see Quilts=Art=Quilts before it closes Sunday. I'm always curious how the staging is set for these fiber works. My Lotusland is balanced with a large portrait by Fuzzy Mall (lower) and a pieced medallion by Laura Hartrich (upper). They all have great breathing room. 
 

Stitching Rules

 

l regret not having the name of the best in show winner for QAQ, I'll try to update. This double sided work was of interest in the stitching that was added, outlining shapes from each side, and stitching so each side had even stitches showing. It is the focus of the judge for this type of work as well. 

Schweinfurth Artists' Talks

Chriss Johns talks about her large, dramatic work during today's artist talk at the Schweinfurth's exhibit Quilts=Art=Quilts. There was a robust crowd, all engaged with the ideas and processes, plus the extra chance to take in the artworks. It was a day to be energized by the works there, each having a 'say'.
 

Plants Take a Holiday

There are a few days left (till Jan 5) in the Quilts=Art=Quilts exhibit at the Schweinfurth Art Center in Auburn, New York. The large piece here is mine, and has enough botanical elements that I can claim 'botony' for a subtheme. It's a tightly chosen show, each piece a great example of contemporary art.
 

Quilts=Art=Quilts Lecture

The annual Quilts=Art=Quilts show has two of my works in the show. I gave a trunk show lecture today, unusual for me. But I got to share "The Devil's Garden" which will ship out this week to Form Not Function in New Albany, Indiana. You have some idea of the size. Photo courtesy of Jean McCreary. 
 

Wish I Was There Part 2

As you know, I wasn't able to attend the opening of the Quilts=Art=Quilts exhibit at the Schweinfurth Art Center, but my friend Bev sent these to show where my two works were placed and it good company. Top is 'Rite of Spring' to the right of the pic; 'Plants take a Holiday' lower pic at right. 
 

New and Just Hung Up

The little piece on the left (still needing a name) will go the Schweinfurth's Art Center's auction wall with others included in the Quilts=Art=Quilts show. It is a smaller version of the accepted piece 'Rite of Spring' which carries the same kind of composition. It's always fun to see who wins these. You can, too!
 

Early and Late

 

Top view is near the start of the piece, the bottom view just before I put it on the longar to quilt. It's about 24" wide and will go to the Schweinfirth for their silent auction during Quilts-Art-Quits. 

Such Small

I got a couple of hours in Studio 301 today and made progress on this little auction quilt. When I've another small work (for an upcoming show) I'll gang them and quilt on the longarm. This will go to Schweinfurth. 

The Start of Something Little

Rite of Spring was accepted in Quilts=Art=Quilts for this fall. The Schweinfurth asks for a small donated work, which I have made in the past to resemble the large work. Here's my start after searching for the odds and ends of the large piece. It was quite a hunt. The large is on the wall, small on the table.
 

Quilts=Art=Quits Again

After the meeting of the Finger Lakes Fiber Group, I went downstairs to the Schweinfurth's exhibit of contemporary quilts. This time, the crowd was sparse, and I could focus on the work. Plus, friends were there to bounce ideas around on the how, why, and ifs that are always brewing. Get there if you can!
 

A Spectator's View

It's always good to see what surrounds your work, and so that's important to ask others (if you can't) to send you photos of the work in situ. I'm across from a happy pink thing by Victoria Findlay Wolfe, and at the end of the hall, the best of show work by Laurie Paquin. Visit the Schweinfurth's website to see more.
 

Quilts=Art=Quilts

The Schweinfurth Art Center's Quilts=Art=Quilts exhibition, now for over 40 years, opened last night. My work Congregation was part of the offering, and I'm in great company. It's always helpful to see how it was placed, what works are around it (that work with or against it) and the flow of the exhibition.
 

Trimmed and Quilt Ready

The largest graphic, and most important element is the cluster of dark circles, and I wanted them to be different than any other part of this composition. The rest -- the three quarters that circle around it -- mush together in vaguely the same weight. This is now quilt ready.
 

Last Call

I returned to see the Quilts=Art=Quilts exhibit a couple of weeks back. My piece is in good company, but soon the party breaks up and all the folks (quilts) go home. So, you've got a couple of days to find the show -- check the Schweinfurth's site for times -- and enjoy Contemporary fiber work. 
 

Quilts = Art = Quilts

The Schweinfurth Art Center's annual fiber art show Quilts=Art=Quilts opened tonight. The works are fabulous, the company even more so. These people take their work seriously, strive year after year to rediscover the pull of textiles, and support their colleagues. It shows here. 
 

Off We Go!

Oh, I forgot to measure this before I sent it off to the Schweinfurth's raffle quilt section. I suspect it's 28" x 26" or so. Facing, sleeve, hanging rod, all stuffed in a box and mailed out today. Made from the leftover pieces from the one they accepted in their Quilts=Art=Quilts show.
 

Kind Days of Christmas 11

This photo of the Schweinfurth's Quilts=Art=Quilts exhibition came to me via text. A friend was on her way back north and stopped to see the show. I love that it is shared, talked about, part of our history. A kind and thoughtful gesture. 
 

Picking Favorites

I love to ask others what they would choose to own from all the pieces in the exhibit. Astrid Hilger Bennett's work always strikes me as joyful and full or life. So, I'd choose hers, the one in the middle, to own. Since it is made as a functional work, I'd use it as well.
