Surface Design Schweifurth

 

Yesterday was Beyond the Surface at Schweinfurth Art Center. Two artists' work; first Krystle Lemonias who portarys domestic work of caregivers for it's content, second Gerri Spilka's work in printed and painted fabric held me for the dynamic shape and color. Both exciting, all worth the trip.

Field Trip

An hour away from home is one of the premier contemporary quilt shows. An annual event, Quilts=Art=Quilts, gathers works from around the world. Always playing her strong graphics, Gerri Spilka sent "Say What?" to this show. I got to share it with my friend, another wonderful part of my day.
 

Quartet of Technique

Gerri Spilka's talk included recent works that use various surface design techniques. I was intrigued with the effects from direct painting with thickened dye. The tools she uses are so different (though familiar) from what I use, with surprisingly fresh results. I look forward to seeing more.

Larger Than Life

My outing was to the Schweinfurth Art Center for Gerri Spilka's talk. Her work is bold, large, graphic and full of color. All good reasons for my being attracted to her contemporary quilts. She explores graphics, piecing, and surface design so very well. Thanks for the insight today, Gerri!

Room Full of Gerri

The World of Threads showcased an entire hallway to Gerri Spilka's work.  Large, graphic, and organically shaped quilts seemed to do-si-do as you walked between them. Wish I could have a long view, but glad to see a formidable group.
