On the Line

A most handy closeline is up and filled within an hour of class's start. Margaret got her piece up and finished, showing how she loves clean, pure color saturation. There is a myriad of styles here, which is so great to see the variations in printing applications. And Coupeville is gracing us with perfect skies

Let the Fun Begin

We've settled in the Pacific Northwest Art Center's workshop space with everyone grabbing two tables to print large and bold. The first day had direct scraping on fabric, rubbings and work with stencils. With silkscreens in hand, we'll start to add resists tomorrow and dive into printing more. 
 

Surprise Posting

 I was surprised to see my "In the Weeds" quilt show up on Instagram to highlight a workshop June 15-19  for the Pacific Northwest Art School in Coupeville, Washington. I love teaching there, and I'm thinking that I need to emphasize printing for wearables because we're going big and bold, of course!

One for Me, One from You

Through the printing week at QBL we chose to talk about a piece we'd made. Many dogs (decided so by the maker) were part of the morning's lineup. The final day we choose not just one of ours, but one from a classmate. What fun that was -- to see our work through other's eyes.
 

Works in Progress

It goes without saying that printing is a layered process. One set of marks evokes a response from another, until that point is reached when the work says "I'm finished!". Only the maker knows. And if we could read behind that mask, we might have a good guess too.
 

In the Pink

The class work lived up to the title of the workshop "Go Big, Go Bold" with a definite emphasis on scale. Here is one ready to go, on our last day of the workshop. It was a wonderful group to work with, and the Madeline Island School of the Arts staff was a joy. So long, Santa Fe!

 

Printing Virtually, Printing in Santa Fe

February 14-18 is a screen printing virtual class where we do all things silkscreen. Yes, of course we do lots of other tricks. And March 7-11 is in person printmaking class in Santa Fe. Take you pick. Both are great, and both work big. 
 

Something Great

There was something great about this week. Maybe it is that we got to print. Or that we could cook up some great new technique. But I think it was that we could once again gather and commiserate about how to make art. Thank you, Art Quilt Tahoe for providing the chance to do all of this.
 

No Place for Ordinary

The class is still for a moment just to gather and take a class photo. Behind them is about 400 yards of fabric in various stages of printing. Yes, it was a five day class compressed into four, but we did an enormous amount in that time. Bravo to this group and thank you.
 

Connect the Dots

Jan is making these dots work every which way. It's a wonderful exploration of using a motif to the max. We've one more day of printing madness, so we'll see what the next iteration of these dots is. 
 

Wave Back at Ya!

My class was really cooking at the end of day two for Art Quilts Tahoe. With 20 people in the room, we fit this large hall very well. Tomorrow we'll dig in to silkscreens and compositions. What a place to work with fun and welcoming people.
 

Going Big

When I approach teaching Go Big, Go Bold, I am looking for something that holds the entire piece of cloth. Yes, you can cut it into sections, but can it read as a whole composition? This print was made at the last of the session, and answers that question in the affirmative.
 

Comparisons

Returning home is a good time to reflect on in-person workshops. I'd never had to compare virtual with in-person until now, and yes, in-person is different. The atmosphere is both close up and distant, and with benefits. I'll be doing more of both types in the fall, and appreciate their differences.

 

One Last Time

Jane lets me know the true meaning of going big and bold. We'd reached the last day, last print, last bit of print paste to use up. And she took to this oversized piece of linen to scrape her design. What a fun class. I'll be back at Pro Chemical and Dye next year. Thanks to my 2021 class!

 

Time and Space

For a five day class, it would be ideal to have a day off in between. To think, to spread out, to regroup. Maybe just to print. We do what we can given the space and time. And I think we do it well. 
 

View of the Room

After a year of virtual teaching, it's nice to be at the same table to talk about the next step, or brainstorm the best tack for the problem, or just to see how the magic happens. And there are15 ways to see that.
 

Two Days In

Day two of printing workshop Go Big, Go Bold, large scale graphics have started to take hold. After getting silkscreens ready, folks printed more the layers graphics. We'll add color and composition to the mix next. 
 

It's Just Find On Its Own

It could easily be a stand alone yard. But I've added this to the next improv piece. I've added others as well, and they're about to get mixed up. But this could stand alone. Or one I'd use to teach next week's Go Big, Go Bold class at Pro Chem.
