Area for Installation

Christ Church is nestled close to the Rochester Contemporary Art Center where the building faces the center's modern wall. That wall is used for art installations, and if I ever get my act together, I'll submit a piece for that call. Matter of time, right?

Waiting in the Wings

My waiting wall is for trying out stuff that calls from poking through prints for the main design wall, but strike me and ask for consideration. The right one will be sent to Quilts=Art=Quilts for their silent auction (a mini-me for what I'll be showing there) and the left for the ROCO member's show. When I'm done.
 

Getting Some Air

 

I judge the value of the work, as well as the value of the exhibition, on how much space there is -- breathing space -- between artworks. This exhibition of SAQA NJ/NY at RoCo has enough to separate the works. I've seen better, I usually see worse. It will travel and redistribute, with different results.

Apparent Contradictions

 

It was opening night for the SAQA NJ/NY exhibition 'Apparent Contradictions' and the crowd was thick. And the panel discussion went well, some great questions, and always a good vibe from the Rochester Contemporary Art Center staff, they put on a remarkable event. So, go see this show -- till September 20.

Disarrangement

 

Here's the full version of 'Disarrangement' that will be part of the SAQA NJ/NY exhibition at Rochester Contemporary that opens this Saturday. Close inspection (for those who know I love to hide squares,) will reveal a few squares that are let-in to the overall large print. Something that intrigues me to no end.

Rochester Contemporary Art Center hosts a SAQA NJ/NY exhibition that opens this Saturday evening. There is a panel discussion starting at 7 where I've been asked to participate. What pearls of wisdom I can muster after a full day of "Music on the Porch Day 2025" will be the spectacle to hear. Join us! 
 

Donation Time

Each year I try to add a few pieces to the Rochester Contemporary Art Center's 6x6 fundraiser. All donations are 6"x6" square; sometimes 6x6x6. All are anonymous, are $20, and there are thousands donated. One of the few times I donate. I'm trying to meet the weekend deadline, wish me luck.
 

Another Sold

Although it's just 6 inches by 6 inches, I'd like to think it is monumental in design. Who would blink if I said it was 6 feet by 6 feet. Anyway, thank you kind friend for reaching out to Rochester Contemporary and purchasing this little sewn collage. 

Sold is Good

Rochester Contemporary's annual fundraiser sells donated 6 " x 6" works for $20 each. This is one of four that I've donated, two are sold. You can search and select from thousands on their website. Artists Voices

After I spoke, I relaxed to hear other artists in the Member's Exhibition at Rochester Contemporary Art Center. Rodrigo, an industrial designer from Mexico, now Rochester, waxed deliriously on his explorations with paper mache. He was excited to carry the tradition of "cardboarders". We were too.

 

Small Work, Small Talk

The member's show at the Rochester Contemporary Art Center gives a couple of Saturdays over to "The Day the Artist Talks". Artists get the chance to 'splain themselves, and I've got a time slot. So, if you are around the neighborhood, it's downtown Rochester, New York. And it's fun. 
 

Needing to Visit

My friend checked out the Rochester Contemporary Art Center before I had a chance to see it and forwarded a pic of my piece (largest on top row) where I used just one yard of printed fabric. This member's show is always charming for the diverse and varied talent. And always displayed well,  no matter the medium.

Threadwork Seen

Kate Fischer sent this thread drawn piece to the members exhibit for Rochester Contemporary. I love both the line work and the finish (not clipping those threads) for this work on paper.

Look Up

Got over to see the members show at Rochester Contemporary. Happy to see my work (upper row on left group) was happy too. The show is around another week or so, and this strong showing of hundreds of members' works is worth the visit --  if you're in Rochester, no excuse!

Starting Off

When I teach surface design workshops I demonstrate methods on a half yard piece. This may be one, can't remember. It's got various printing techniques. I'll pair this with another to make my entry for the Rochester Contemporary Member's show.

Someone to Watch Over Me

Finding my work amongst the hundreds on view at the Rochester Contemporary Members' Show is always a fun chore. But this year -- bonus! I am under constant scrutiny from Individual #1. Can't think anyone will notice my work. 

Winter's Night

"Kalpa" by Symmetry Labs and Alexander Green is installed just next to the Rochester Contemporary Art Center where it changes color via interaction with the crowd. As I left a concert nearby, the cold air, the quiet crowd, and the tree's glow stayed with me.

Back At You

I've got a small piece for the ROCO members' show to quilt. Decided to match the bobbin thread to the top, and this drawing shows on the back. Much  more fun than matching to the back.

Working Small

I don't regret the time and care it takes to make these small 6 x 6 works for the annual Rochester Contemporary show. It's a gift to RoCo, but for me, a chance to experiment, to slow down a bit, to see how a very small work can be a stand in for something grand.

'Splain Yourself

Rochester Contemporary gives artists in their member's show a chance to speak, admit to how and why they do what they do, and basically 'splain themselves. Which I did. My audience is now enlightened.
