Zebras Stripes

Grasses are in their bloom now, and soon will be either left to sway in the winter wind, or cut back and neatened till spring revitalizes them. These were outside the door where I was selling fabric at Chautauqua.

Discharge on a Building

Peeling paint, abraded through years of weather, leave this siding a beautiful light blue hue. I spotted it in Mayville, just down the road from Chautauqua. The flaming color of the vine was a bonus.

Mind Your Modern

The Western New York Modern Quilt Guild found my booth at Chautauqua yesterday. And since I was laughing so much, the photo is blurry. But you get the idea. There is a fun bunch of quilters/artists here. Glad I met them all.

See You Next Season

Before I left Chautauqua, I had to walk past this Cinema. I remember it from the 70s. But now what sticks in my head is the sign -- the acknowledgement that we had a good season, and that, with luck, we will have another. Positive thinking, eh?

 

This is the Chautauqua amphitheater where, as a 16 year old, I saw a television feed of Neil Armstrong walking on the moon in 1969. Talk about time warp -- the amphitheater was build in 1893.  

To Be Seen as Others See Us

I love how you can so easily capture anything you want on some little device. At my booth, the quilt designs fly here and there, only to pop up someplace -- perhaps with a new identity. Alien forms!

Ageless Beauty

The Athenaeum Hotel, on the grounds of Chautauqua Institution, has been welcoming guests since 1881. You would not guess that from first glance. My room is heaven. But I will admit that the floors have a bit of a roller coaster effect. Well, what is straight, anyway?

Packing to Go

Saturday and Sunday this new batch of hand dyed fabric will be at the "Quilting Around Chautuaqua" show at Chautauqua Institution in New York. Chautauqua is tucked into the far left edge of New York, just about to Pennslyvania. There will be a crowd, tons of quilts, and these great fabrics.

Underpainting

Hanging to dry are a few pieces that will later be wrapped around a pole and pleated down, for shibori dyed fabric. I have a few batches going here, and will be packing up to take to sell at the Quilting Around Chautauqua at the end of this month. Heat up the irons.

Grand View

The Atheneum Hotel in Chautauqua overlooks the lake. What a grand view from a very grand old hotel. Built in 1881, it has aged gracefully. We can take a lesson here.

Palestine at Chautauqua

Safed, looking down on the Sea of Galilee in a real-life diorama of Palestine on the grounds of Chautauqua Institution makes anyone scratch their head in wonder. The lake serves to represent the Mediterranean, with the river Jordan there as well. Here is a link to the ancient map: http://www.thenazareneway.com/map_of_ancient_palestine.htm . This earth sculpture has been her since forever, or maybe since the 20s. It is way cool.

Fabric on the Rack

My set up at Chautauqua, with fabric, fabric, fabric. All my hand-dyes, and some shibori. Now some gone to new homes. Quilting Around Chautauqua was way more interesting than I thought it would be and certainly something to write home about.

Being 16 Again

Jewett House was a scholarship dorm at Chautuaqua Institution when I was 16. That was an enlightening summer, this was home base, my room on the third floor. I was a student in the painting school. Now I am returning (as part of Quilting Around Chautauqua) to see my old haunts and sell painted fabric. Ha.
