Area for Installation

Christ Church is nestled close to the Rochester Contemporary Art Center where the building faces the center's modern wall. That wall is used for art installations, and if I ever get my act together, I'll submit a piece for that call. Matter of time, right?

Member's Perks

Rochester Contemporary Art Center opens its members show December 5th. Today, hundreds of artists made the trip to drop off their work, and I did the same. This is about 32" square and will be seen there till February 14. So, if you are around Rochester, take a stroll to see work, grab a coffee, and chill with art.

 

Never the Twain

I've two works to go to respective shows, left for the members show at RoCo, right for the silent auction for Quilts=Art=Quilts. But not before I have some fun joining them to see possibilities I'll not grab. Another time, another set.

 

Getting Some Air

 

I judge the value of the work, as well as the value of the exhibition, on how much space there is -- breathing space -- between artworks. This exhibition of SAQA NJ/NY at RoCo has enough to separate the works. I've seen better, I usually see worse. It will travel and redistribute, with different results.

Apparent Contradictions

 

It was opening night for the SAQA NJ/NY exhibition 'Apparent Contradictions' and the crowd was thick. And the panel discussion went well, some great questions, and always a good vibe from the Rochester Contemporary Art Center staff, they put on a remarkable event. So, go see this show -- till September 20.

Apparent Contradictions

Rochester Contemporary Art Center hosts a SAQA NJ/NY exhibition that opens this Saturday evening. There is a panel discussion starting at 7 where I've been asked to participate. What pearls of wisdom I can muster after a full day of "Music on the Porch Day 2025" will be the spectacle to hear. Join us! 
 

Three Versions of Edges

These go out tomorrow to Rochester Contemporary for their annual fundraiser 6x6x2024. I experimented with the edge treatment. One is wrapped with strips, one nothing, one with a back that flopped over the facing. All are fine, got lots of stitching on edges. And they are fun to make. Important!
 

Another Sold

Although it's just 6 inches by 6 inches, I'd like to think it is monumental in design. Who would blink if I said it was 6 feet by 6 feet. Anyway, thank you kind friend for reaching out to Rochester Contemporary and purchasing this little sewn collage. 

Four for 6x6

Second Saturdays had me in Studio 301 with some tinkering time, so I took the trimmings from the last quilt and made some quick little 6 x 6 squares for the Rochester Contemporary exhibition. It is a big fundraiser with all works at $20. All works are 6" x 6". These are four to go out the door.
 

Artists Voices

After I spoke, I relaxed to hear other artists in the Member's Exhibition at Rochester Contemporary Art Center. Rodrigo, an industrial designer from Mexico, now Rochester, waxed deliriously on his explorations with paper mache. He was excited to carry the tradition of "cardboarders". We were too.

 

Small Work, Small Talk

The member's show at the Rochester Contemporary Art Center gives a couple of Saturdays over to "The Day the Artist Talks". Artists get the chance to 'splain themselves, and I've got a time slot. So, if you are around the neighborhood, it's downtown Rochester, New York. And it's fun. 
 

Needing to Visit

My friend checked out the Rochester Contemporary Art Center before I had a chance to see it and forwarded a pic of my piece (largest on top row) where I used just one yard of printed fabric. This member's show is always charming for the diverse and varied talent. And always displayed well,  no matter the medium.

Off to Exhibit

 

Rochester Contemporary holds a member's exhibit each year, and so I dropped this "Blue Dice" off today. It makes it just under the 32" square guidelines, and will be up till January. If you're in Rochester you can see it from December 4 to January 9. And yes, this is a One-Yard Wonder. 

Fabric Paintings?

The fundraiser for Rochester Contemporary asks for donations of 6" x 6" art. They're anonymously sold for $20. I'll just make the submission deadline, I think. These are canvas glued with my printed fabric. I'll do more, just because.

Threadwork Seen

Kate Fischer sent this thread drawn piece to the members exhibit for Rochester Contemporary. I love both the line work and the finish (not clipping those threads) for this work on paper.

Duck's Breath

Thought you'd like a closer look at Duck's Breath, my work that is now hanging in the members show at Rochester Contemporary. It's about 3' square, and features two of my printed fabrics. The left is a monoprint made on a foam sheet, the other mostly silkscreened..

Look Up

Got over to see the members show at Rochester Contemporary. Happy to see my work (upper row on left group) was happy too. The show is around another week or so, and this strong showing of hundreds of members' works is worth the visit --  if you're in Rochester, no excuse!

Inside / Outside

Colleen Buzzard curated a show "Inside Out" that deals with the space either interior or exterior (or both). This cardboard group (and I'm sorry to not know the artist) sits on a clear plexi shelf that gives a group of strong shadows from the single light source. Such dynamic shapes!

Up and Delivered

I've finished the piece I'll call "Duck's Breath" in time to drop it off for the Rochester Contemporary Art Center's member's show. A statement in minimal piecing, this is all about leaving the print to do the work. The show opens December 7. If you're round Rochester, NY, stop and visit!

Starting Off

When I teach surface design workshops I demonstrate methods on a half yard piece. This may be one, can't remember. It's got various printing techniques. I'll pair this with another to make my entry for the Rochester Contemporary Member's show.
