New Big Leaf Day

With the snow fall, temps in single digits, I spent the day virtually with the Ohio Modern Quilt Guild making The New Big Leaf. I ended with a demo leaf, and I like the quirkiness of it. If I had time, I'd finish, but tomorrow I'll set the stage for a print class, if I can get out of the drive. Still not shoveling.

 

Should've Stayed Home

I added about two dozen new prints to my website store. I chose them because #1 I have many and #2 I have others. Some I know I shouldn't let go, and when they do, have a tinge of remorse. Then I remember reasons #1 and #2. Have fun, new owner!
 

Wash Day

I've a few yards finished and washed from the last two workshops. This is a demo print, and there are some rough places, but I can selectively work around them and use the parts that are cleanly printed. I like the layers available here, and will definitely use this  piece, not let it go to the website store.
 

I'm Keeping This

A demo print, this is a print with a soy wax screen, where the wax is put on the screen instead of on the fabric. I love making a motif that has a spine -- it means that I can attach the motif in a line and imply a large screen or a large image. I'll have to make more.

Home Again Work

I've finally cracked open the box with my demo prints from San Diego. Added to the January class, this pile of unfinished work is pretty darn high. So, I spent printing time adding to these. The water heater is cranked up, the washer humming away. My goal is to post new yards to my store this weekend. 
 

Last Demos

Today ended the five-days over two-weeks Printing Under the Influence class. We circled back to areas that needed review -- composition, mark differentiation, what to do with the half-finished pieces, and other pressing issues. Pressing because I'm off the air, and we go our ways. Always fun but always sad to end.
 

Start to Finish

Another pass over a demonstration piece. The topic was the difference between printing the table, and direct printing on the fabric, lower piece here. My additions added color, more printing, and color blocks. Not what I started with!

 

Washed Out and Ready to Go

Here's the demo piece I made for the Quilters for Ukraine event (I taped). It's ready to put on the website store. Note that the turquoise is considerably lighter. I knew that, and also that the dark printed circles would be a purple. Hard to convince, but understanding the final color is the voice you want to hear.

 

Kind Days of Christmas 5

When I teach, I work differently. More spontaneously, quicker, less aware of the particulars. Must be because I'm talking as I demonstrate. What happens is an all together different image. I have to thank my students for getting me to do this. It would not happen otherwise.
 

What to Do With This

I've been washing out pieces I made during the QSDS class, mostly demos. And they are some of my favorites, because I experiment more with them. When I iron them out, some land on my design wall, and buddy up with another. This combination intrigues me, so might have to make it up. For real.

 

Presto Changeo

What was fun here was to add the red shapes (a friend called the wild guitar picks) and then even out the background. But, I left a "halo" around the picks just to make them livelier. Maybe this is the bluegrass band I'm looking for.
 

Let's See Where This Goes

A demo for rubbing, I believe, with some scraped color is the start of this yard. But it's lacking some oomph. So my homework (and the class's too) is to take an image of an unfinished work and then another shot of it with additions. I'll let you know what I did tomorrow.
 

Experimental, Dear Dyer

It never fail to amaze me what can come from just fooling around. The base for these was a quick demo on something -- what, I couldn't say -- but I used up dyes from a month ago to complete them. They've a bit of everything, and lots of something. Love these whole cloth experiments.
 

I'll Tell You How

This is a demo piece, but worthy of higher praise. I demonstrated how I mix chartreuse and oranges, as well as purple. Then the ins and outs of scraping. But having some light area left, I combined the leftover print past to add the leaf stalk as a graphic. One of my favs.
 

Quick Demo

There is an opportunity that happens when I am not allowed to ruminate on a piece too long. The leaf was a fast soy way demo, and drawn quickly. Likewise the other forms that were printed. I gain confidence in placement, and try to connect the graphics and composition to work. But quick quick.

 

Sample This

As the virtual workshop week unfolds, more sample yards emerge. I'll grab a yard and demo screen printing, scraping color, printing over stencils, and printing using tyvek. I've taken a liking to these demo pieces as I always learn to loosen up, and ways to melt diverse elements together. 
 

Circle Back

Demo examples are always fun to return to and decide what I need to add to the yard to make a good composition. Something of a challenge, but it's better the more times that choice is made to rearrange or add. But, new batch of dyes needed. Tomorrow's list!
