Two Walls, Same Motif

In my Printing Under the Influence class I asked the crew to start two pieces with identical motif hits, and then finish them differently. Mine are now talking to each other on the design walls. I'm set with the right, still canoodling the left. Finally made it back to the studio for a short while today.

Just Fabric

At the end of the virtual workshop "Printing Under the Influence" I had a pile of first layers. Many times they need little printing, only adding a background or fill. I like this one and I'll bring it to my Santa Fe printing class with MISA next week. If I have room in the suitcases.

Pinup the Beauties

At the Printing Under the Influence's end I explained how these prints came about. I'm using screens made in class, and these are demo prints -- that is -- made to try out screens, colors, rubbings, stencils and all kinds if experiments. But as a group, they are definitely workable for a 'real' piece. Great.

Doing My Homework

We're on to the second week of Printing Under the Influence tomorrow and I've managed to squeeze some time in the print studio to finish out some of the pieces I've started last week. I did assign a homework challenge, and I did one as well. We'll see how the washout goes.

Printing Influentially

Using an old unfinished print (unwashed, still soda in it) I tried some stencils and over scraping to change the feel of the design. It's open for more prints, and I'll try some Wednesday when the Printing Under the Influence workshop continues. Meanwhile, I was happy to stay put as we had about 8" of snow. Here is what I woke up to at 7 am.

My reminder that their are just two spots left for this virtual class. It's a great way to ignore weather, bad dogs, cleaning junk drawers, and taxes. Info at www.patpauly.com/virtualclasses

Pick a Print

I with I could show you the vast output 20 printers can make. We had a seperate room to lay, hang and stack our prints, and even that wasn't enough at times. The seven day class is over, it was a blast, and now I've turned to sewing, cutting, and design for the last week at QSDS.

Atypical Moment

Our week with printing with thickened dye had us gloved and aproned. But there were a few times we came together to talk design, technique, and art. Rare, but needed. I brought "Plants Take a Holiday" to talk about, and it was nice to have feedback on the printing variety in the piece.

Show Offs

There was a lot of happy going around today as we looked at the week's results from Printing Under the Influence. The seven day class left a long day to dig in and print, print, print.

Printing Under Influence

One person's print influences another's work. You can't help but watch how layers are placed, decisions are made, and finishing details are chosen. It's a great group of people, and we're making a lot of workable prints at QSDS.

In the Thick of It

By Wednesday one can't tell the experienced printers from the novices. In fact, I can't even remember. Some of the exercises are repeated from other classes, but they always yield such different results. I wish you could see the 'drying room' where there are about 80 yards of prints full of energy.

Explosion of Day One

Many of the folks in this QSDS class are proficient in technique and composition. Doesn't stop them from having the experience of others working close by. We are all influencers in this regard, watching pieces develop in real time. Why being amongst the print club is a good thing.

Found Objects

On the streets of Baltimore today I found so many shapes, and I've collected these for my class Printing Under the Influence at QSDS this May. I've many more, and I'll print them out for reference when I get to the image part of the printing. I know I can translate this in several techniques.

Washout

Last day of class for Printing Under the Influence. I've been washing out the prints I did, some are fine as is, some will be cut apart into sections and interspersed among others. I did find a screen that I will use again and again, like the dots I love. And the botanicals remain a favorite, so that's the continuation.

Shadows and Plants

I ask folks who are in the Printing Under the Influence class to note natural forms that inspire and influence. I noticed the shadows in the snow last night, and see next to that photo was a process shot of a print. Hadn't connected them before, and these 'balls on sticks' must be on my radar.

In Process

Two examples of my homework to lay down motifs, then finish, taking process photos midway and after washout. Can't say they are my favorites, but are great in parts, which is all I strive for in any yard I print. And yes, there are a couple of rough spots. But again, I'll cut them out. Joy of editing!

Three Little Maids From School

There are assignments in the Printing Under the Influence workshop, and I try to do them as well. These are demo prints made from silkscreen day. My challenge is to record my progress. Here's the start, and I'll finish them and show you what I did. By the way, you should see what the others do, it's fab.

Printing for the Influential

Today was the start of Printing Under the Influence, an advanced class for those who have had one of my previous workshops, virtual or in person. It is five days over two weeks. I've another set for January when you may be snowbound. Or just in need of a great print workshop. Details on www.patpauly.com

Virtual Classes

I finally nailed dates to slot virtual classes for this fall. Some folks can't make the dates -- how could I know they were cruising the Nile?? There is one new class, and all are variations of how I print and design improvisationally. No surprise there! They are on the website www.patpauly.com/virtualclasses

Before and After

I love to record the progress of the piece. If nothing else, taking that photo gets you to slow down a moment, to see what you can change, before you plow back in and print more. These are about a day apart, and the second is washed and pressed. So different.
