Packin It Up

I spent today taking apart and boxing up my studio 301. You may have see this view when I was working on a piece, now it's ready for the movers. My new studio will be the lower level of my townhouse. There is boatload of work to be done there, but the reward will be satisfying. So, stay tuned.
 

Studio Flip Design to Print

My dear blog friends, you know what the my studio looks like when I'm designing works, hosting a First Friday, or working on a project. Here is a view of midweek where printing is in progress and works are getting built. A different way to use the studio, and keep in mind, we were only six in the room,

Printing Day

The studio was flipped from a sewing/design space to a print space for the week. We all braved the sub zero temps for the drive in, but are promised above freezing tomorrow. Let's hope. Day one was fun, focused, and we were all in by the end of the day. The screens show up next.
 

Repopulate

New prints were added to the design studio. One was a fragment with renewed life from dropped color, and it wants to chat with another piece that was waiting for that friend. I've made small progress on the winter project, but mainly set up the studio for tomorrow's virtual workshop "New Big Leaf".
 

Next Big Thing

On the pinwall, high as I can comfortably reach, is the next in the leaf series. Darned if I can't pick a name. You see it unfaced here; that's happening now as I watch the telly. The Other Side

I love changing out these walls, if for no other reason than to compare the newer work to the older work. Now that the windows have curtains, I get diffused light in the fall and winter months, so I can have these walls set with textiles and not fear the direct sunlight fading them. 
 

Street Presence

Needing a little signage for outside the entry door to the Anderson Arts Building here. I took an Ikea tray, screwed it to the brick wall, added adhesive backed letters and called it done. It joins an eclectic mix of other signs just as creative in their execution. Now I need to replace the little tray.
 

Left on the Wall

I was in the studio for a brief time before heading out to the east coast. It's always good to return to unfinished work, the edits are easier with a fresh view. so, this is now connected and ready to be quilted. And I left another large beginning for when I return. 
 

Gallery of Friends

I caught the exhibit at Rochester Institute of Technology today where all the exhibitors were connected to the Anderson Arts Building where I have my studio 301. The scope and depth of the works is wonderful. This rug hooker, Diane Philips, has always been a favorite of mine Here is a close up.

 

Where I'll Leave Off

I'm so close to the finish line, but packing and closing up the house is near, so this will have to wait for me when I return from Des Moines. I'm looking forward to sewing and designing with the Des Moines Area Quilt Guild, as well as a bit of forecasted warmer weather. It'll be fun to see what happens!
 

First Friday Fun in 301

Our studio building, once a shoe factory, now houses a restaurant on the ground floor, as well as a violin shop and four floors of artist's studios. Many open their doors to the 'crowds' on the first Friday of each month. I'll be here in Studio 301, not back on First Fridays till June. So, hey, see me while you can!
 

Small Exhibits, Big Thoughts

Aaron Delehanty's diorama installation piece is shown at the Anderson Arts Building, in a space one floor above my studio. So, easy for me to take it in this First Friday. He is interested in the confluence of natural history, and human-animal and to non-animal to animal relationships. Big thoughts for a small space. 
 

The Artist at Lotusland

Today was drop-off day for the portrait 2025 show that opens Jan 3rd at Studio 402 at Anderson Alley Art Building. I find these fun to make, and a great collage type exercise. I ended up sewing raw edge for the majority of pieces, and adding a quilted stitch over that edge as well. It's 20 x 26 and for sale in the show.
 

It's a Start

The annual portrait show is in the Anderson Arts Building, where my studio is located. I've pulled together some fabrics I'd like to use that may suggest a figure. I've a couple of days to get this off to them, and I'm not committed, but I'd like to make the deadline. If my head clears from this cold, I might make it.

 

Perks of Outside Studio

I returned to rent studio space away from my home studio after about 40 years. My space is fairly quiet, but there are artists near; a little chat is always welcome and uplifting. I realized that as I spoke with Karen Sardasco, her apron seemed to be one of her paintings in draft form. Wonder if I'm seen the same?
 

On the Wall

Nearly finished, just some major seams and a last look to see if that is the final 'answer' to this wall's givings. I've a little lecture to finish, an entry to finish, and some packing to do yet this week. But I know the studio will wait without complaint. Can't decide if I have Friday clear for First Friday at the studio. 
 

Back at the Ranch

After a handful of days away, I made a point to get over to the studio. At seven minutes of drive, it's easy, just had other stuff to take care of. There seems to be a dark thing growing on the design wall, and I like it. I even know what it is. I'll clue you in when I get closer.
 

First Friday

The view from the farthest corner of my studio after visitors have taken a cookie and gone on to the next studio. It was a nice evening, and lots of people came and did the loop around. A few mentioned that they hadn't seen fiber work in town much. So, this will be my community service -- spreading the fiber cause.
 

Studio 301

Back to reality and the studio work. This was waiting patiently for my return, and it didn't take much to edit and scope out what I'd do with this to tame it into submission. A good day when I can get over to this studio.

First Friday

The portrait exhibit, a yearly extravaganza, opened tonight in Studio 402, the floor above my studio. I nipped in to see it, check my piece (just to the right in this pic) and learned later that it has been sold. So, a good night for me! Works will be up next First Friday as well, so if you're in Rochester, NY, go.
