Saturday the Ohio Modern Quilt folk will join me in a virtual workshop to work with freezer paper methods for construction. We'll take on The New Big Leaf, and it's wonderful to see how each interpretation differs from the next. I'll put up the thermostat, it's a chiller out there.
Contemporary Art Quilter Pat Pauly's random thoughts and excursions made public.

Big Leaf (Only Bigger)
A few years back Noel Keith took my New Big Leaf class in Syracuse. Yesterday the Finger Lakes Fiber Artists saw her nearly finished piece. She broke the design with multiples of leaf shapes. And met her goal of using her precious African printed fabric. Well done!

Using that Old Fabric
I can't remember how many years ago I met Tracey at "Quilting Around Chautauqua," a now has-been show, and she bought this great piece of shibori fabric. I don't make that much of shibori anymore, so it was my duty to get her to cut it up! You can see how her New Big Leaf will be a winner.

Warming Leaf
The New Big Leaf was the project du jour. Mary and Peggy had sympatico fabric choices, and brought warmth to this Ohio town. Tonight we've been blanketed with snow, April teasing Spring.

One Yard Wonder
Liz took advantage of my challenge to make her New Big Leaf block from one yard of my hand dyed fabric. The block is not sewn, but you can see how spectacular it will be. Such a fun, hard working group yesterday at the Towpath Quilt Guild. Thank you for having me!

Full House
The New Big Leaf came to Delmar, New York, and the Q.U.I.L.T.S. Inc. guild. Although I've taught this many times, the work that comes out -- the changes in the combinations --- always has me wanting to try a new twist on this pattern. Great group!

Method in Madness
Margaret show the focus and drive in my Big Leaf class in St. Albans, Vermont. This was a talented group of women who made the process look easy. During Saturday's class, Margaret finished one, then Sunday, made another. Talk about high achievement!

She's Got a Plan
Elaine took a yard of hand dyed fabric and used it for all four sections of the New Big Leaf. I've always wanted to try it myself, but she has beat me to it. It will be stunning. The pattern isn't apparent, but there is a plan for all the madness that you see. Trust me.

Emerging Art
Helen welcomed my day by saying she had planned to take my class many many months ago. Such a strong woman could only make strong selections. She is joined by several more brave souls who will be with me the whole week. Can't wait.

She Came with Inspiration
Yes, I know, I know, another post of my "New Big Leaf" class. But the one today had a wonderful quiet pace, and bits of wisdom -- courtesy of Ruthann. Thank you, Portland, for being so much fun.

Can't Get Enough Leaves

Finished and Off to Florida
I'm shipping on this New Big Leaf to Sarasota. This January I'll be there for a workshop with the Friendship Knot Quilters' Guild. This time I used two lovely hunks of hand-dyed fabric, with another (green) for the veins. I like the effect, not to mention the ease in letting the fabric do all the work.

Shortcuts
I've started another (yes!) New Big Leaf, and since I was using the same fabrics, I've attached the veins to the leaf fabric before I cut out the sections. Now that's better than chain piecing. Those who have made this pattern know what I am up to.

Make Mine a Double
I've got two of four on the design well. Trying to make the center light, like a square on point. We'll have to see how it looks.

Another and Another New Big Leaf
I've sent off examples of my New Big Leaf to guilds here and there, so now I've none to show when I travel. Time to do another. This batch of fabric was a gift from Beth, so I'm trying this color scheme. Except the green is mine.

Packing the New Big Leaf
I've finished the New Big Leaf in a four patch set and it is already nestled in the suitcase ready for the Vermont Quilt Festival in about 10 days. Now to wrestle the other quilts to get folded and packed up.

New Big Fun
My studio assistant (my daughter) and I set up a four patch of the New Big Leaf. She decided to make one with solids, and I mixed it together. I like the print v. solid look, will have to experiment more. I'm bringing this with me to Vermont Quilt Festival where I teach at the end of June.

Big Leaf Redo
I wanted to try another version of my Big Leaf, so have sketched it out. Taking this to Tennessee next week to see what happens.
