Another Joe Day

I love museums, but Joe loves them more. And sure enough, as a busman's holiday treat, Sunday we found a traditional quilt amongst the contemporary painting collection at the Memorial Art Gallery. They seem to want to say something, so this was their chance. Maybe a newer one next time. To match the time frame.
 

Grid Fabric

I've tucked the pattern into the selection of grid fabric, moved it aside in Studio 301 for today's tour with the MAG council. About 20 women toured the studio getting a run down from the "how do you start" to "what finishes do you use." Wonderful questions, and honored to be a part of their tour. 
 

Need a Magnifier?

The show I saw Thursday at the Art Gallery had prints with extreme detail. This stash of magnifying glasses stood ready for anyone who might need a closer look. But I can't see they were used much. Too pretty of a display in themselves, I think.
 

Containers

Augmenting the show at the Memorial Art Gallery of prints from the Renaissance were pieces in the gallery's collection. This box has ivory faced drawers. I love when artifacts come out of their deep storage to give a "flat" exhibition three dimensionality. 
 

Off to the Gallery Store

The Memorial Art Gallery's store was low on my printed pillows, so I took these over to add to their collection. It's a great place to see regional art from every field in the arts. I'm happy to hold up some of the fiber end.
 

Going Home

The Gallery Store at the Memorial Art Gallery has (or had) a set of my pillows. Seems that someone needed eight of these, and cleaned out the store. Well, you know what I've got to do now.

What Would I Want?

I like to choose a piece that I would take, if I could, from any exhibit that I see. It's an exercise that makes me clarify, as well as verbalize, why it merits my attention. A game best played with another, certainly. The Finger Lakes show has Colleen Buzzard's piece "Hard Merge from Left" and is my pick. Most appealing is the ordinariness of the materials.

Finger Lakes Exhibit Opens

Tonight's opening meant lots of people. Don't be fooled. These people were talking to each other, just turned in a way to seem like they were interested in my work (the one in the center of the pic). Mainly it was time to see friends and catch up. Art looking will be another time.

Scarves to Go

The Memorial Art Gallery as well as Shop One at RIT sells my scarves. Well, they will have more next week when I drop off a few more for them. I use silk exactly as I print the cotton. Loads of color, these are soft and easy to wear. Someday I'll find time to make a shirt.

Pillow Stack

Next week I'll pack these pillows up and deliver them to the Memorial Art Gallery. They're all hand printed and full of color. The shop will echo the next show "Finger Lakes" that highlights artists in this upstate region of New York. I'm happy to be included in the show. And the Gallery Store.

Almost Missed This One

I entered three works in the Memorial Art Gallery's exhibition "Finger Lakes" and got a notice for declining the first two. Hadn't thought about the third, and hadn't read that it was accepted. Come to find, yup, I'm in. So in June, "Take Two: Chinese Lanterns" will be seen.

The Sunday Crowd

Victor Vasarely's " Quasar +" from 1966 was on my tour Sunday at the Memorial Art Gallery. The serigraph was all precision, graduation, clean. That the eye wants to see an "X" in the piece is part of the optical illusion's charm. Good clean fun.

Material Culture

Added to the inventory at the Memorial Art Gallery are more of my silk scarves. That they suggest the purse and necklace (fine choices, I think) to match means you need very little to pack. Like just black and black.

It's All Silk

Four silk scarves are hemmed and ready to pack for my visit to Sudbury and Fall River this week ahead. The scarves are fun to make, but someday, someday, I'd like to make a blouse with that fabric. They are printed with the same techniques I use in my cotton yardage. Yes, I sell them.

Off They Go

The Memorial Art Gallery sells my pillows, and since they are all sold out (!!) there needs to be more. So, tomorrow these screened, printed, and dye painted pillows head down the street to live in the Gallery Store.

Outllines

Wendell Castle's sculpture from his current exhibition reminds me of the adage: if you'd want to highlight (no pun intended here) a shape, put a line around it. I've spent a few days adding thin lines around shapes, and it works.

Wendell Castle Retro

Tonight's visit to the Memorial Art Gallery was to see the Wendell Castle retrospective exhibit. I loved the early work from the late 50's, and was so surprised to see work done in 2017. There is a freshness to his work and monumentality. I mean, check out the shadow from this table. Even that is luscious.

Objects in Boxes

"The Admiral's Game" by Joseph Cornell is one of his mysterious boxes. I saw this today at the Memorial Art Gallery, and it brought back my fascination with his collages -- bits of things suspended, placed, fiddled with. His work made it all right to collect and keep objects. I've got boxes too.

Huggin the Back Wall

It's great to be the anchor for other fine works. The Memorial Art Gallery's Store painted the focal wall to highlight my work, set off my scarves, and show my pillows. If you're in town, check it out.

Poetry in Thread

You'll have to zoom in to see the words and threads on Lesley Dill's "Homage to F.K. #2" I came across at the MAG last night. Inspired by both Frida Kahlo and Emily Dickinson, she uses cloth and thread to apply lines from Dickenson's poem -- "You cannot put a Fire out---".
