The Blob That Will Visit Columbus

The QSDS weekend class will be Make It & Break It. This will be my working demo on how to break it into segments. The hardest part is picking the fabric, and I won't see this for a while. Packing it for then!
 

Make It & Break It

Two days of great company for a workshop in improv piecing and composition. The online class is the last until the fall/winter season, and I'll be taking this class on the road at QSDS for the weekend June 4-5. and one of the few in-person piecing classes for me this year, and I'm so looking forward to it.
 

Make It & Break It

This week is my last virtual class until the fall/winter season. I'll be teaching Make It & Break It for QSDS, and am already comparing the pros and cons on how the information is seen. Virtually, it's quick to add a short slide show with progress shots. Oh, well, can't have it all. And, live is live.
 

Best Face Forward

The facing was sewn today so that I could put it in my suitcase for a lecture tomorrow. The sleeve will have to wait. I'm having a tough time remembering the last in-person lecture. It should feel so odd, almost like starting over. We'll see, I'm on home turf, so it will be among friends.

On a Roll

As I roll on through this "Love Letters Lost" on the longarm, I'm glad there are images for me to pick out and quilt. I'm using commercial fabric for the backing, wool inside. The commercial fabric is easier to needle than my own printed fabric. Important for adding the facing and sleeve. 
 

Finding Your Place

As I arrange and rearrange, I feel I'm in a never ending Sudoku puzzle. There are so many permutations, and in the end, they all work. I'll put and take a bit longer, then I've got to get this assembled and finished.
 

Emerging Blocks

Just as I cut them, the blocks are added to the design wall. I'll play around with the final setting later. For now, I'll have to figure out the dimension of the piece -- wide, tall, or square.
 

Taking the Blob Apart

I've used a 12 1/2" square template to cut this blob into squares. My long ruler is great to cut a long strip that I can then cut apart in that square. My cutting table is over 6 1/2' long, so this is easy to do.
 

More Blobness

This is just what I've put together for the large remixed parts. I'll assemble this into one large construction, and then take it apart with a template. 
 

The Start of the Blob

This demo was started in the last Make It & Break It workshop. The color and graphics I find compelling, so I'll try to finish this before our "reunion" next month. And we'll see how it works out. I'll be teaching this workshop at QSDS in Columbus, Ohio in person (!) June 4-5. Maybe you want to be there, too.
 

The Fabric Was Flying

 The first of the two-day Make It and Break It class. It started with great progress on improv piecing, the the goal to make a giant blob and cut it up. This is the demo I had already to go. 

Columns Sketched

I've done a few sketches for an upcoming class "Columns". I've got the two starters on top, the mix at bottom. The class is about composition using a columnar form. Another class "Make It and Break It" deals with improvisational piecing (as does Columns) but with adding a template to capture the design. Make It Reunion

Often, a class reunites for a look back at work done after a class. This is a quick study I make for Make It and Break It. And I swear I'll put it together one of these days. There is a great depth in this little study for me, and though not large in scale, it has a great draw. Reunion is tomorrow.
 

Two Inches Too Wide

Haven't found a title for this yet. But, it will materialize. It's 40 1/2 x 50. Too wide for the next show where I thought it would go. So much for portion size.

 

Wish You Could See

In two days for the Make It and Break It workshop, wonderful compositions emerged. And they were grand scale, and made from printed (by the artist) fabrics. Just so happy to see the fabrics used in a creative and vibrant way. Thanks to my class, I had such a great time, and miss you already.
 

Make It and Break It

Today was the first half of Make It and Break It. And what a treat to see everyone again from the printing classes. A true exploration of how to use hand printed fabric! This is just one way to explore, but it's addictive in its simplicity. Tomorrow is bigger and better.

Ready to Quilt

The top is sewn and ready for quilting, but life is going to come first. I've got a few things to get ready for, and so this will have to just wait in line. Plus, it can travel light if I leave it unquilted, so might bring this to Fall River and Pro Chemical and Dye when I teach soon. 
 

Sizing Up

The piece stretches over eight feet wide at this point, and I'll look to add height top and bottom. I think the proportion works better for that size. And I've started to lock in the parts that flow well together and either define a block boundary or allow a pattern to flow through that edge. 
 

Dropping in a Grid

I've combined the half yards and then split out foot square sizes to populate the design wall. I've added in the remaining half yard pieces, mostly, and started to get them integrated. Now it's time to move the blocks around and around. The dizzy part of this.
