Shirt Weather

A few days after summer's heat and it's still shirt weather. This is from the last show at the Textile Workshop and Museum by Will Stokes, Jr. pigment on cotton sateen, 1978. A long-time artist with the TWM, he passed recently. Imprinted on Cloth

Tonight was the opening of the Schweinfurth Art Center's exhibition with four surface designers -- Petra Fallaux, Karen Schulz, Margaret Boys Wolf, and me. It is a lovely look at rich  color applied to fabric, unique voices and motifs, and a wonderful statement on current surface design in fiber work. Go see!
 

Print Club of Rochester

The exhibtion opening of the Print Club of Rochester at RIT had extras for the curious -- a print fair! Richard Kegler is a masterful printer who shared the portfolio of the alphabet as abstracted in color and form. What a treat to see these graphics in person. The exhibition is up till July 20th. 
 

It's Packing Time Again

San Diego's printing workshop starts February 5, and these will travel with me for the class. Yes, measuring cups, tape, and hot glue gun. Isn't that what everyone packs? It'll be a fun break from this gray winter weather. 
 

How Much Fun?

Along with a tour and talk of my exhibition, I got to hang out with this printmaking class of Eileen Bushnell at RIT today. I brought along thickened dyes, fabric and print tools, then I printed. One quiet student said she was 'pumped', I said it was hard to tell. A ton of laughs with this crowd. Thanks!
 

Print Santa Fe

March  7-11 I'll be teaching for Madeline Island School of the Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Print your heart out. We're near some fabulous sites of inspiration, not the least of which is the Museum of International Folk Art which will be a field trip!. Details on my website on the calendar page.
 

Joan Lyons Exhibit

 I finally got a chance to get out. Joan Lyon's work with cyanotype prints made from folding light sensitive paper intrigued me. In fact, each of her works made without a camera were inspiring. You can catch it at Colleen Buzzard's studio at Anderson Alley Artists' building in Rochester. 

Printing Differently

Part of the fun of being in Art in Craft Media is to see what others are doing in the field of High Craft. This is the work of Courtney Haeick "In Motion". Each print (that is, I think they are blueprints) is 84" x 30". Each is a figure at life size.
 

How It's Done Right

Part of the benefit of taking a virtual class is that you really think about your own work space. When it was time for laying wet printed fabric flat, students designed amazing new ways to dry their prints. I'm sharing Karen's brilliant solution. I might just have to be her student!
 

Reject Pile

These will get "refiled" or folded at some point. Just won't be used in the work I've got on the design wall. Oh, well, that's good for the next.

Not Too Early

Some printing classes I teach will need fabric prelabeled and soda soaked. My class in April will need about 75 yards. So, now's the time to get started on that stack. And I need more for ME as well. I'm sewing tyvek squares for that name tag. Fabric is cotton.

Little Tricks for Printing

I've used a water soluble felt tip pen to draw the boundaries of my images. With a brush I painted the soy wax. So, so helpful to know where to make that first drawn line.

How Many is Too Many?

I was once asked how many screens I use. I don't keep track. But here is what is kicking around at the moment. You'll see that they're not washed out and the thickened dye is dried on. I'll get to that since it's just a cold water rinse and then I'm good to go.

Up and Delivered

I've finished the piece I'll call "Duck's Breath" in time to drop it off for the Rochester Contemporary Art Center's member's show. A statement in minimal piecing, this is all about leaving the print to do the work. The show opens December 7. If you're round Rochester, NY, stop and visit!

Don't Sit Down

Where  there are about a dozen printers in the room, well, you run out of horizontal space. So, on piece was draped over a chair. This was glorious day 4 of printing. We're tuckered out, but happy. I think.

Checkin Out First Friday

A stop on the First Friday list of open galleries and studios was ROCO and their current show "Under Pressure" featuring printmakers. The work at right by Pamela Drix caught my eye. Layered, looped, printed paper was pinned to the wall.  It felt like fabric, so similar to fiber art.
