Chalk is Your Friend

I use few tools, but this marking chalk is the best for indicating my cut lines, and registration for two large pieces. Sometimes it's too cumbersome to move the large sections and while it is on the design wall I can just draw easily. Also great to indicate where to add a pieced line.

Medallion Start

I've been asked to design a t-shirt for the Art Quilt Tahoe shirt. Here's the start. You'll have to wait a month to see how it turned out (me, too!). It's a prime example of "Start With Dark" the workshop in Coupeville November 15 - 19.  Space still left, and I know my friends from north of the border would be there if they could!

Start With Dark in Coupeville

Mid November starts a class in Coupeville, Washington (on Whitby Island) at the Pacific Northwest Art School. It's "Start With Dark" and we explore and print with thickened dyes, starting, you guessed it, with dark. There will be no whimpey prints! We aim for great fabric with depth. Join us! https://pacificnorthwestartschool.org/product-category/fiber-arts-workshops/

Begin Again

I've started to pull fabrics for the next piece. I've been asked to add a quilt to an exhibition with the theme that encompasses "orange". Can't figure why, but I like a challenge. So, here's the start. And lord knows, I've more fabric still piled up!

The Reward at the End of Class

Saturday's last stop was Bend, Oregon. My dinner hors d'ouevres was Ben & Jerry's ice cream. Good thing I was with others, or I'd have gotten a pint. Thanks, Sisters and the Stitchin' Post for hosting me, it was wonderful to meet and work with talent from near and far.

End of Class

The gang at the end of two days was still smiling. I asked them to design in a different way, they did, and we had fun. Need more? Thank you Sisters.

Making thr Grayed

We started small, added some real estate, and (with luck) will finish large. Maybe the vibes work if you wear what you piece.

Brilliance

Brilliant weather each and every day illuminated this class full of inventive printers. At the outset we knew some had never printed, at the finish it was imperceptible who they were. Thank you sister printers.

Nearly the End

With one day left in the Sisters Oregon workshop we did a premature celebration. I should show you the brilliant work, but didn't record them. How's about tomorrow?

In the Thick of the Dye

We're in the middle of the printing class in Sister's Oregon. It's fun, challenging, and a heck of a lot of fabric printing. Who knows what will come of it all?

Great Graphics

Ann Clarke's fulled rug has fluid, drawn lines that mimic a scientist's plan. In my printing class, if it were vertual, I could show this image as a point of discussion. But in an in person class, not so easy. The perks, the pitfalls. Can't have everything.

Harvest Moon

Tonight's Full Moon must have that green cheese squeezing out. I'll be far away from my moon stand in tonight, but will, like the full moon, circle back.

Door Guards

Like good soldiers, these cases are ready for the action that awaits. Each is ounces away from the top limit of 50 pounds, so I'm looking forward to the return with less weight. In the case, and who knows, in my package as well.

Art in Craft Media

The Burchfield Penney Art Center in Buffalo's exhibition runs to November 28. I'm always happy to be in a crowd of others. Other media, other regions, other voices. The catalog is top notch, so I'll share it here with you. If you're near Buffalo, it's a swell show to see.

Marking Pens

It's rare that I apply paint after printing. But these line might convince me otherwise. For the thick line I've used a Posca pen with a wide foam tip to add acrylic paint in a wide line. The thin white marking pen is from Mirabu and is called a fashion liner. I like that white line.

Influences from Afar

My friend Ariane Zurcher has returned from her trip to Africa and we talked yesterday about influences of the cultures there. I shared with her my Kuba cloth pieces, this one is eight feet long and two feet wide. One of the panels is here, and is full of wonderful graphic symbols.

Interview with Ariane Zurcher

Ariane Zurcher asked me to be interviewed. I thought you'd like to see my little setup. Out of sight is some printed linen and silk. You can find the interview on youtube channel "On The Other Hand". Here is a link. (Look for the interviews set. In a day or so.)  https://www.youtube.com/c/ArianeZurcherOntheOtherHand/playlists

Get Ready for the Storm

Next week I'll be in Sisters, Oregon to teach. Which means I've got to figure what I will need for that future. A storm, if you ask me, where I need to predict what and why I pack the items. Now, ask why working virtually is easier. But, I'd miss that vista from Sisters.

Results from the Washer

Two pieces that were demos from the last workshop Just Silkscreen finally got through the wash. I added some after the class just to turn up the color volume. Seemed to work. The one on the left is not such a great print as a whole (blue smudge) but I have lots of usable areas to dissect.

Printing Differently

Part of the fun of being in Art in Craft Media is to see what others are doing in the field of High Craft. This is the work of Courtney Haeick "In Motion". Each print (that is, I think they are blueprints) is 84" x 30". Each is a figure at life size.

It All Comes out in the Wash

The end of the printing week means processing the fabric. This is my first cold water wash, and by the dark looks of it, you'd think the entire batch was stained black. No so, and the whites stayed white, the colors vivid. Oh, ye of little faith.

Bravo to the Candy Corn

The end of a justifiably wonderful Just Silkscreen week had nine people sharing tips, quirks, problems, and successes. These workshops always get me to try a few novel ideas, and I had a fun time sharing them. Well, they pretty much challenged me to do them. Thanks, all you printers for the great week!

Before and After

The Just Silkscreens workshop continues with members adding a before and after of the print they were making. This is one of my demo pieces, made to illustrate techniques we use. And so, check my before and after.

My Linen Fabric

The talented Ariane Zurcher embroiders improvisationally on linen, and has taken a shine to my printed and painted fabric. So, I made a line just for her and those who follow her work. It's on my webstore under "linen" of course. See what she does in her "On the Other Hand" YouTube channel.

How Many Screens Do You Own?

If you've got a  couple of silkscreens, that's good. More? Better. Just Silkscreens is the workshop this week, and today we dove into soy wax. Well, figuratively. And that means, find as many as you can to try things out. I even make a three screen / three part print. New tricks!

Starting a Print Week

Eight intrepid printers are on my screen today. And bracing smoke, limited table space, getting up early, and Pat's relentless drive to do EVERYTHING, we managed to have a good printing day. Tomorrow is near, and we'll dive just a bit deeper. Just Silkscreens!

We Were All Smiling

After my little talk at the Burchfield Penney Art Center about my work (top left) I promised to post on this blog. We had fun, a good discussion, and saw fabulous art from "Art in Craft Media". If you're in the Buffalo, New York area, don't miss it. And thank you kind audience!

Two Inches Too Wide

Haven't found a title for this yet. But, it will materialize. It's 40 1/2 x 50. Too wide for the next show where I thought it would go. So much for portion size.

Ready for Whatever

I added its facing and sleeve during my little vacation in the Adirondacks. I've now got to get this over to its next little exhibit at the end of this month. It's two half-yards mixed together. With a bit of thin line thrown in for good measure.

Checking on Friends

While exchanging works and leaving more pillows at Shop One on the RIT campus, I visited pillows I left a few months back. I'd forgotten how much I loved them. And I don't know if I could reproduce this print again. Guess that's why they're one of a kind.

Source Material

I'm committed to making an orange quilt. For a show and soon. How can I start when there is so much of summer I've not taken in? This is just a few houses down from me on my walk around the 'hood. I'll pretend that it's needed source material for the next work.
