Art Imitates Life

A visit to the Portland Museum of Art and the David Hockney show brought this juxtaposition. I asked the visitor if I could take his picture, and gosh, it's just like David was here himself. Life keeps doing this -- bringing me these dual images. 
 

Give Me a Panorama

Up on the rooftop of a new build in Portland, Oregon is a panoramic view of the hills (mountains?) around the city. Mt. Hood the most noticeable but also the dome of Mt. St. Helens (off this view). We finally had a clear day with warmth to boot. So, a good sightseeing day for contemporary design. 
 

Obsessed with Color

Near the workshop space in Vancouver is an exhibit of fiber works that used a challenge to express an assigned color. The High Fiber Diet group is a part of the Columbia Fiber Arts Guild in Portland, Oregon. Beautiful works, abundant talent!

Mutual Admiration Society

My favorite circle is to ask the printers to choose a piece they admire of another printer. It's the best time to hear why they admire the work, what parts they love, and especially the surprised happy response from the maker. I had a glorious time in Portland/Vancouver, even this brief time for Just Silkscreens..
 

On the Road

I'd not a lot of time to get in the wonderful artwork that is throughout Portland, Oregon's airport. Believe me, I'll be lingering on my way out. I'm here for a lecture, then a three day workshop "Just Silkscreen" where we'll be printing like crazy. Time is short!
 

Happy Family of Artists

I don't offer the same photo to IG and FB, but this is an exception. It's an amalgam of the friends who were on my three week journey out west. I had a ball --  rain, shine, snow, and power outage. Happy thanks to everyone who shares their family with me. 

 

The Fun Never Ends

I was fortunate to work in an off site studio for a class today, and what a treat to work with another eye for printing this. The demo was on printing with a large image and small, loose image. I had fun, was allowed to "do my thing" and they had fun as well. A good day!
 

Roosting

The crows draped themselves in these trees, had their cocktail hour, then flew away to roost. For me, it is my down time in Portland. I'll roost here a few days, then fly away again. So, the journey continues.
 

Portland Organic Love

Saturday was market day and I got to tag along with friends who knew just what to get and where. Tonight is my last night away from home, and the dinner promises to be superb. Oregon was kind to me, and I can't help but to love it back.

Art With A Side of Quilt

Tamara Staples included this quilted piece in her exhibition "Side Effects May Include" at the Blue Sky Gallery in Portland, Oregon. Based on the pill collection left after the death of her sister, pieces included textiles with graphics made from pharmaceuticals.

Head in the Clouds

I was offered, and accepted, a fight to Portland in a small airplane today. Clear sky, calm air, and nothing to do but enjoy. A great treat for me, and memorable. On to Hood River tomorrow.

Building in Small Scale

When I see this I see a tall modern skyscraper with small buildings and activity at the base. In reality, it is a superb ceramic sculpture about 4 feet tall. Posted outside Portland's Eutectic Gallery, ready to get you in the mood for what is inside.

Railing Wonders

I stopped in my tracks as I walked pasted the Pacific Northwest College of Art School, when I saw a temporary installation of turned (how, I can't quite figure) spindles that were being placed in position on the main building's entrance. Totally fun. Must be I'm in Portland.

She Came with Inspiration

Yes, I know, I know, another post of my "New Big Leaf" class. But the one today had a wonderful quiet pace, and bits of wisdom -- courtesy of  Ruthann. Thank you, Portland, for being so much fun.

Slugs on the Street

Dan Coron's fiberglass and steel sculptures like his "Nepenthes" is seen in various forms around Chinatown in downtown Portland. And although they are supposed to resemble various plants native to Portland, to me they look like slugs. About to slime you as you pass. Bonus -- they light up!

Pretend this is Saturday Night

And that you are landing in Portland where you have to walk across the tarmac and you just look to the left and see the moon.

Everything You Don't Need

Nancy, of Portland, Oregon, and I took in this spiffy Asian/South American/African/Timbuktu inspired place in her town. It was a delight, and I managed to purchase some beads. Can't need nothing.

Artifact Times 399

William Morris made this wall of hand blown glass for installation in the Portland Art Museum. He mimicked stone, bone, and wood with his glass. Intending that we look at the objects (greater in its sum, than its parts) as a collection. He got the art part of artifact right.

Drawn with Chalk

Twice I passed this sign (on the street in Portland) and was struck with the image of the salad. I thought it was a photograph, at first. Then I fell in love with the great illustration in chalk that stopped me in my track. Tip of the hat for hand-drawing.

Manic Kin

I know that these ladies need their hair and clothes to be truly presentable, but here is how they appear in a riotous Portland store. Maybe it is just a way to desensitize us for eventual hair loss. Ha!
