Hot Talk in Naples

What a lovely group who came to hear my impromptu talk about the quilts on view at the Cleveland House today. We talked about everything, and best part was that a special guest could make out the sewn script on the 5th grade bicentenial quilt. Really fun, even on this hot day. Repeat talk August 29 at 1pm!
 

New England's Gem of a Museum

I spent time with works new and old at Lowell's New England Quilt Museum. I was fascinated with the "Summer Collection" with regional quilt groups' work, as well as the the museum's collection. This scrappy historic quilt caught my eye when I thought I was looking at a print, not the batting. 

 

Quilt With Fugitive Color

I've had this old quilt for years and years. When it was first made, all the red baskets were RED. But one of the reds was fugitive, and 'beiged" out. I'm intrigued with how those parts placed themselves with built in randomness.

Marking Time

As the day slowed down its pace, this couple walked in a family quilt, looking for clues to what it is. What a wonderful break -- to go back in time, think about how it was made, when and for whom. It's an Oak Leaf and Reel pattern, and we figured about late 1800s made. What a treat.

Ah, Fun from the Past

This buoyant old favorite showed up at our quilt club yesterday, and let in sunshiney life. A friend, who knows more than I, pointed out what I had missed, that was the quilting line went right through the applique shapes. I was just intrigued with the signature, and hadn't noticed its finer points. Thanks, friend.

Bring on the Crowd

What a difference a crowd makes. Here is that beautiful set of historic quilts paired with Sue Benner's piece (left) and Terry Jarrard-Dimond's work (far right). The SAM gallery is brand new. What a spot to see these works.

Fun with a Hexagon

Built from hexagonal shapes, this 1808 quilt is full of flowers. Seen in Nebraska at the International Quilt Study Center this August.
