It Really is This Much Fun

Christina plowed and persevered through the sketches today despite a sore knee (evidenced by the cautionary orange tie) at the Connecticut Piecemakers' workshop today. We worked hard, played hard, laughed hard. Took our mind off the world's ills, certainly.

Packing the Essentials

Agents must have a good time figuring out what I'm up to with quilts, fabric, rotary blades, rulers and such. I've paired the clothes down, even my kit bag. Just what I need for three days in Durango, Colorado. I'll be teaching at Stitch on Thursday, and just a door away from the quilt shop. Better leave room.

Parting Shot

Before our room returns to its clean state, I took a backward glance at the riot of color and pattern we had on the tables and the walls. We meant to make only sketches this week, but couldn't resist making finished pieces. Ok, can do.

Sometimes There's Quiet

Given space, time, and motive one can do wonderful things. This was the view from my class today at QSDS. One more day to spend with creative minds.

Gone to a New Home

This piece, which gained the nickname "Spring Cleanup" went to its forever home. It was for sale in conjunction with the QSDS faculty sale. Those little red sold dots always make me happy, but always a bit nostalgic as well.

Today Was Red Day

Our group photo was in shades of red. My QSDS class is held on the campus of the Columbus College of Art and Design and my room is a fabulous amount of space for each person to spread out to work, complete with a large design wall. I couldn't ask for more.

Edit, Edit, Edit

Improv Sketches was the class for today with the Tampa Bay Surface Design Group. We used a large frame to find the perfect composition in the small works that we make improvisationally. It is cut and shift, add and rearrange all day. Fine group of people to hang out with.

Scrap Bag

I consider the left over cuts from the larger works "scraps", but these are not average commercial prints. They are part of my hand prints, and have lots of life. Not to mention that there are changes in the pieces themselves. So, tomorrow I'll combine, uncouple, and reset for another small improv piece.

In the Meantime, In Between Time

This is about 2' x 2'. I'm getting a few smaller works in the queue to take when I teach at QSDS this June. I've planned a great week of "Design Camp" where we start with small works and work into larger, more complex ones. So, this is starting small. Well, medium.

Foot Square

The light chalk lines are letting me know the boundaries I'll keep in mind when I trim the excess before I quilt this little block. I'm not sure where I'll use this, perhaps as a little study for a larger work. Or for an auction piece. Either way, it's a great improv design exercise.

Poster Child

I'm using a poster where I've cut a 12" x 12" window to help me edit where to land the square. After a few experimentations, I think I'll keep this one for the SAQA auction. Now to finish and on to quilting.

Improv Sketches

I'll be taking  a few small works on the road, or sending to auction. So, I've leftover bits to assemble, cut apart, reassemble, recombine. QSDS's class this June -- "Design Camp: Improv Fabric Sketches" works like this. (Bad title but great fun.) Hey -- join me! It's class #19     http://www.qsds.com/classesbysession2019.html

Tools Some More

While I am at the "wet" side of the studio printing fabric, I glance back to ruminate on what's hanging on the design wall. Next up are some 24" square works for Improv class. I'll use this sheet of mylar (with a 24" square drawn in marker) to select the area that I want.

You Art What You Wear

Karen is responsible for getting me to visit British Columbia and has been my host for the week. That she can also pound out a great abstract piece in half a day (or get this far, at least) is terrific. I loved the two day Improv Sketches & Take Two. Fun group.

How Fun Was That?

The Wayside Quilters of Sudbury, Massachusetts hosted my Improv class today, and we worked hard. I told them all I knew, so now they an conquer any improv design that comes along. Really. Fun group to hang with on this great spring day.

Redo, Remake, Reinvent

Next week I'll be teaching a class I call "The Skinny Line Leaf." I had a pattern, but never quite warmed to it. So, I've redone the leaf. It will take some improv piecing, skinny lines, and no pins!

Time to Think

Space, light, time. That's what you need. Oh, and a big design wall.

Quick Walk Around

A "walk around "is just shorthand for an impromptu look at what the class is doing, a bit of examining an explaining, and a way to compare notes. Ellen has the spotlight, and I'm happy to hear her viewpoint.
