What Would I Want?

I like to choose a piece that I would take, if I could, from any exhibit that I see. It's an exercise that makes me clarify, as well as verbalize, why it merits my attention. A game best played with another, certainly. The Finger Lakes show has Colleen Buzzard's piece "Hard Merge from Left" and is my pick. Most appealing is the ordinariness of the materials.

Finger Lakes Exhibit Opens

Tonight's opening meant lots of people. Don't be fooled. These people were talking to each other, just turned in a way to seem like they were interested in my work (the one in the center of the pic). Mainly it was time to see friends and catch up. Art looking will be another time.

Pillow Stack

Next week I'll pack these pillows up and deliver them to the Memorial Art Gallery. They're all hand printed and full of color. The shop will echo the next show "Finger Lakes" that highlights artists in this upstate region of New York. I'm happy to be included in the show. And the Gallery Store.

What They Think is Fiber Art

Slowly spinning from a string from the ceiling is Alejandro Gutierrez's piece Dreams in the Finger Lakes exhibition. It is made of painted pillowcase.  This is what the juror from the High Museum choose for what he described as quality work. And I did read his statement. And wait -- Gutierrez's second piece (made of painted t-shirts) received the Rochester Contemporary Award of $500. I'll be back to boycotting this show again.

Finger Lakes Exhibition

I finally got to the Memorial Art Gallery, found my favorite. This mixed media piece by Belinda Bryce has layers of imagery (those light blue dots) as well as a cylinder, hat, circles and boxes of color. There was little fiber in attendance.

The 64th Finger Lakes exhibition is on at the Memorial Art Gallery, and tonight I took a look. Having boycotted for the past few years, I am reminded again why I did. No art hanging resembled work that was fiber/textyile in nature, and the few that might be construed, were cleanly framed or mounted. Might not bother with the 65th.
