Where It Was

I went back to see Quilts=Art=Quilts before it closes Sunday. I'm always curious how the staging is set for these fiber works. My Lotusland is balanced with a large portrait by Fuzzy Mall (lower) and a pieced medallion by Laura Hartrich (upper). They all have great breathing room. 
 

Quilts that Catch My Eye

At least 700 quilts were in the exhibition part of the Festival of Quilts 2025. This one I found particularly fun -- the Condom quilt. Four maintenance (?) workers stopped to examine and chuckle over the imagery. The quilting included the same shapes as the pieced 'in use' condoms. Good fun all around.
 

Visit to Q=A=Q

Quilts=Art=Quilts is over three decades old. This annual exhibition has a strong year this time, and I finally got to see the show today. My two pieces are visible here -- the large one greets you, the second is to the right in the far corner room. I love that you can see both, like they can take care of each other!
 

Unfinished Business

The large piece comes in at about 8 feet square. It's in the queue for quilting, but so is taking a break at this holiday. Time for family, friends, feasting. And maybe a movie. Hope you are doing some of the same. 
 

Quilts=Art=Quits Again

After the meeting of the Finger Lakes Fiber Group, I went downstairs to the Schweinfurth's exhibit of contemporary quilts. This time, the crowd was sparse, and I could focus on the work. Plus, friends were there to bounce ideas around on the how, why, and ifs that are always brewing. Get there if you can!
 

Gallery Minders

At the gallery, where I'm showing work, there is always a lovely person to greet me. When I say my name, they, every single one, lights up and smiles, declaring that they liked these works. I remembered today to ask why. The answer: they are full of color and make her happy. She'd like one in her bedroom to look at. Perfect answer!
 

Last Days Last Look

It's not everyday this many of my works are in a single exhibition. Here is a selection on the main wall. It's a grand space, lots of air around each piece, with the most beautiful light. Up till October 7 at RIT University Gallery.
 

In a New Home

This photo was sent from the owners of Travelogue to show how spectacular it looks in its spot. I knew that it would sit on a green wall, so I was careful to move the lights to the outside edge. I love how it looks, and in that space, it just glows. A fun commission, and delightful people to work with.
 

Volume of Space

I think of this volume of space when I visit large museums, so for a gallery space to have this amount of headroom, and wide open space, it is rare. So love the light that is here, not only for it's expanse, but also the quality of the even light spread. Hard to beat.
 

Opening Night

It's a rare night, when the show is all about you. And odd to be the center of attention, with people taking the time on this beautiful day -- clear, cool, sunny -- to come and see my work. So, thank you all. It'll be there still until October 7th. Check the "Plan Your Visit University Gallery RIT" for hours.
 

Finished

I finally got it back in the studio light to photograph and pleased with how it looks. The only remaining part is an embroidered signature, hidden lower right in matching tread. I'm nicknaming it Travelogue. 
 

New and Just Hung Up

Finished this so that I can enjoy it a week before I pack for a solo show that is installing this week. I always enjoy living with these, and can't for the life of me understand how one would not want to see their work in the changing light of day. It's called "Plants Take a Holiday"
 

Under the Needle

It took a few sessions, but this latest piece is now quilted. Next trim, then finish. I'm gearing up for a solo show set for late August. More on that later, of course. Just feels good to have this part done. Buy, oh, I've not got a name!
 

Time for Celebrating

Judy Kirpich (red glasses) presents her work in the second floor gallery above the Quilts=Art=Quilts exhibit. Its a vast, open room where her works are given the breathing room and reverence they deserve. I'm sure that she felt loved, celebrated, special, accomplished and happy. We all confirmed that.
 

Something Here is Speaking

While working out examples for the next class (time is ticking) this pairing showed up. Diversionary as it may be, I think there is something here that is talking to me. So, I might as well sew it up and finish it. Valentine's day has me seeing a broken heart here. There's the title. 
 

Second Set for Breaking Apart

Here's another set of nine patch squares from my four fat quarters. This selection is holding together better, and I think it matters what the fabrics have in them. Definitely need one very different and two that are similar. 
 

Nine Patch From the Blob

I got nine squares from my blob, and just about nothing left over. I've spun these blocks every which way, but still think they're not the best. I blame the fabric choice. Still better than the blob. Stay tuned.
 

Off to Exhibit

 

Rochester Contemporary holds a member's exhibit each year, and so I dropped this "Blue Dice" off today. It makes it just under the 32" square guidelines, and will be up till January. If you're in Rochester you can see it from December 4 to January 9. And yes, this is a One-Yard Wonder. 

Let's Start Here

One yard of printed fabric will be the challenge. It's about 40" square, and a submission for a show needs to be less than 32" square. I'll make this a one yard wonder. You can guess what I'm going to do.
 

Details, Details

Karen Shultz has been synthesizing line for years now, and each time her work appears at Quilts=Art=Quilts I take notice of how she uses this element in the composition. Mixed Messages is her piece for the show, definitely a show worth seeing. And a very covid-safe and friendly place.
