Off They Go

March is just around the corner. It seems that way, at least. So the folks in the Glorious Prints class will be looking for plastic and tyvek. Thought I'd send them on a bunch. And I packed my new favorite Roman brand scraper. Christmas in February!

Run Around Day

Good thing I got a few hours in the studio day, today I was in a doctor's (routine) appointment, 4 hours of the joy of buying a new phone (see photo), and a three hours of instruction for music. I ate fast, I drove fast, and am going to crash fast. Tomorrow is another day, thank you. I'll have more on that list to get finished.

Back to the Studio

I'm working my way across this piece using sections or "columns" at this point. Once I get the parts together in a column I will rearrange to see if there is some magical redo. And if you want to try a Columns class, it's on the website. www.patpauly.com/virtualclasses

Altered Print

The first layer of print had red flower heads in circles with circles mixed in. I thought the contrast was too great with the white background, so I added color to tone down the white. I like this better.

Pretend It's Friday

Friday was the last day of Printing Under the Influence and I dropped the gloves, had dinner, and then binged my favorite TV while adding the facing and sleeve to my latest work. I totally forgot to post, and so pretend this is midnight Friday's post. I'll not forget you tonight (which is Saturday).

Many Layers

I don't consciously think about layers. I just add and add and add.  But I've seen and heard that 'layers' term so often. I am just making things more complex, more complicated. So that piece on the table from last night's post got a coating of color. This became a more useful piece.

End of the Day

The gloves are off, and so am I. The white lines were made with soy wax on a silkscreen. The color was scraped afterward. It'll be a great piece to use in the Line, Shape, Setting workshop in February 7 and 9. There's just a few spots left. www.patpauly.com/virtualclasses

Whatever Is That?

Every so often there appears something that looks like mold on the surface of the print -- a kind of white residue. This image is before washing. Not to be concerned, it is the soda ash migrating to the surface. It's all out when washed. (Just in case you had this show up in your own works).

Before and After

I love to record the progress of the piece. If nothing else, taking that photo gets you to slow down a moment, to see what you can change, before you plow back in and print more. These are about a day apart, and the second is washed and pressed. So different.

My Glamorous Life

Floating in a bucket of hot soapy water are a dozen or more foam roller heads. Seems like I forget I already own this many when I purchase new. Thought it might be time to give a good soak and dry before tomorrow's printing class. This is the maintenance that never is factored into time on a finished piece, sigh.

Night Out

Last night was the Little Café for live music and light dinner. This café features independent artists throughout the year, each month bringing new art. I can't think of another place that does this in Rochester, so I'm happy to patronize. And happy for the break.

Managing the Team

The beginning of a new piece means it's time for a meetup. So the team is assembled to see if each player is pulling its weight. And to see who is behaving and who is not. I'll bring a few more pieces to the studio on my next visit.

Line 'Em Up

Today the Printing Under the Influence workshop was screen printing, so many demos and many screens. These were the soy wax ones and a print hangs above using the middle screen. I think I've found a new friend in that motif. Stay tuned.

Time for Screens

Printing Under the Influence continues Thursday with a crash course review of silk screening. I have at least 3 dozen frames, but still had a tough time deciding which would be 'scrubbed' and remade for demos on applications of resists. Hey -- I think I have more in storage! Phew.

Just Visiting

On loan to my daughter, this is in the guest room. So when I visit I can wake up to me. Keep in mind the ceiling height is 8 1/2 feet high. So it's big.

Time Off

I went skating. Yes, I found new unused muscles that burned a bit, but no falls, no scrapes, no goals. I've skated casually since I was allowed out of the house. Then, our nearest bit of water was Ellicott Creek, and that had water flowing under the ice. This was tame, and I'll say smooooooth, by comparison.

Selfie Selfie

Alien Walking Her Dog is in the bottom half of the pic here. And I realize that it needs to be flipped. Which doesn't explain why I look odd, just my out-and-about look here. You get the idea of how large it is (it's small for me) by what is around it. Do that. Use your work in context so we know its scale.

Artists Voices

After I spoke, I relaxed to hear other artists in the Member's Exhibition at Rochester Contemporary Art Center. Rodrigo, an industrial designer from Mexico, now Rochester, waxed deliriously on his explorations with paper mache. He was excited to carry the tradition of "cardboarders". We were too.

Finally It's Winter

Until snow covers the ground it's not time to hibernate and work in the studio. Finally landed. Not any record accumulation, just enough to usher in white. So, I've gotten on the long arm to finish the two works in line. But now the longarm has acted up. Oh well, I think a break is in order.

Small Fry

Oh, the things that come in the mail! You might call this down-sizing but I'm hoping it's "right-sizing". I've purchased a 7" size electric frying pan for soy wax. More room to work. Thanks for the tip from one in my workshop. Next week I'll use it for Printing Under the Influence. A small but mighty group!

Small Work, Small Talk

The member's show at the Rochester Contemporary Art Center gives a couple of Saturdays over to "The Day the Artist Talks". Artists get the chance to 'splain themselves, and I've got a time slot. So, if you are around the neighborhood, it's downtown Rochester, New York. And it's fun.

January at the Beach

Our January has had very little snowfall, and so I took advantage of easy driving to visit a friend and her new beach front home. It is so refreshing to be out and look so far away. Yes, it's cloudy, and yes, it's cold. But the landscape is compelling.

Look at a Distance

I've started to scramble the next set of fabrics on the large design wall. Before I left for the day it was an easy look back. There are parts I want to freeze, some I want to melt together, some I think can fall off the cliff. It's that kind of a landscape.

Taking Notes

With a couple of design walls, I'm able to let one design sit and ferment. To keep track of changes I take a quick snap on my phone's camera. It's easy to find the series. And easy to return to a placeholder. This isn't done yet because I like each of these. Indecision is all right, I've got another design wall going.

Next Virtual Class

There is a bit of room left in this virtual workshop. It is a five day class that we spread over two weeks. So, Tuesday, Thursday, Monday, Wednesday, Friday. Having the days between are great to catch up, try out, and recover energy. It's available on my Virtual Classes page of my patpauly.com website.

Who Looks Up

My new blue lamp shade from below will be my full moon standin. The studio won't have me fixing/painting the ceiling anytime soon. That'll be part of the charm. Just focus on the lamp, please.

In Time for First Friday

It always takes twice as long as you think. Why I don't remember this rule -- well -- it would help. Tomorrow I'll sweep up a bit and accept guests who drop in for Rochester's First Friday events. I'm in studio 301 with this monster, my little portrait is upstairs in 402 for a show. Split personality!

Just Put a Frame Around It

Studio Neighbor Lynn is checking out how my work would look with it stretched. Just for laughs. This Friday is another First Friday and I'll change out the yard of fabric outside Studio 301. If you're around Rochester, New York, it's a fun night to see ALL the open studios. But I'll have chocolate.

On the Wall

It is a subtle difference from what I've posted before. And more time spent, but worth it. I've added height to the work, melted the edges of the connections, and am close to finishing. One of these days we'll get a snowstorm and I'll have an excuse to longarm quilt this.

Alien Walking Her Dog

Studio 402 has a portrait show each January. It's fun, filled, fabulous. This "Alien Walking Her Dog" will be there for the opening this Friday, January 6 from 6-9. It's at the Anderson Art Building just above my studio 301. Yes, I'll be there in my studio while the party is going on in 402.

New Year New Classes

"Well, it was about time for these to show up!" is what I keep hearing. So here is my list so far. There are two more, waiting to get linked in on the website. Two are virtual printing classes, two are virtual design classes. All are live action over Zoom. Did I mention we have fun? www.patpauly.com/virtualclasses
