Non Traditional Materials

I'm not sure why we label these as non-traditional materials. Artists have used whatever they want to make art. I need not name names. This detail of my piece "Iodine" started today's workshop exercise looking at incorporating unusual items in a composition. Should be fun to see what happens next.
 

Iodine in Silver Springs

Now you can see what I have put in the Radical Elements show at King Street Gallery in Silver Spring, Maryland. On view from April 1 to May 9, it features my Iodine piece. I'll be at the gallery on Saturday, May 3 from 3 - 6. Stop in for a chat.

Finishing Line

Iodine, made for the SAQA Radical Elements show, is finished. I can only show a detail, but I will reveal the whole enchilada when the show is unveiled next year. This detail shows netting, metal grate, bark, transparencies, fabric and my quilted substrate. Now those design walls are free.

Our encyclopedia was finally dumped about 10 years ago, so I had to search for another to find these transparencies. They will be part of the iodine piece. I wish I could find the volume with the body overlays. That was my favorite.

More Iodine Sketches

Taking a break from the holiday hubbub to sketch another little idea for Iodine. This has acetate for substrate, and is shown half folded out. Might have to go picking for materials soon.

Germinating

I like the idea of layering. Whether used in surface design -- like over print, then discharge -- it is fun to look through a design. Here is what was stuck to my design wall, and the germ of the iodine idea. Acetate, printed fabric, fireplace mesh, and some goofy long pin thingies.

More Iodine

'Nother sketch for Iodine. This is half-scale, and is all folded up and 11" x 18". So, unfolded it makes 22 x 36 -- half scale of the finished size. The round thingies are the thyroid glands, the pink slash, the thyroidectomy cut. Medicine can be fun. Right? Oh, yes, that plastic is to stay.
