Double Your Pleasure

Intrepid Australians are in my online workshop this week (they start very early, I start very late) and we've taken on the print double prints, finish each in a different way. My start is above, and for that I've used a silkscreen with a soywax drawing on the back. Part two tomorrow.

 

Final Print Day

What a great week to spend printing and exploring techniques for using thickened dye. I love a virtual winter class to break the long darkness of the winter. Thank you all my glorious printers from England to California. Keep printing, and use that glorious fabric that you've made. 

One is Done

I started with two identical prints that had a red running motif on them. They were to finish in distinctly different ways. One is shown here, the other is what is called a "dye dog" and is back in the soda soak to undergo some more flattering applications. Meanwhile, enjoy this one.

Starters

I've stacked two prints that are starters for our homework assignment. We'll start with similar motifs, then take them to completely different conclusions. It's a fun way to look at composition, and the results I'll try to show you later this week.

 

A Day for Backgrounds

My virtual workshop started with testing color mixes, then ways to lay down backgrounds and beginning motifs for printing. Both scrapers and rollers are put to the task, and now I've got some layers to start adding to tomorrow. Nice crew to work with, and always happy to get back to printing.

Three Little Maids From School

There are assignments in the Printing Under the Influence workshop, and I try to do them as well. These are demo prints made from silkscreen day. My challenge is to record my progress. Here's the start, and I'll finish them and show you what I did. By the way, you should see what the others do, it's fab.
 

The Party's Over

It was a wonderful week of printing with eight little squares on my zoom screen, eight animated printers who tried our nearly everything I suggested, with delightful results --- thank you! They even humored me when I continued with my grid series. We'll meet for a reunion in November, and that'll be fun, too.
 

Far Reaching Little Town

This reproduction of a lithograph is booming Rochester, NY 1868 with a CIRCUS in town. It's the best way to explain today's events. Eight wonderful women from France to Maryland, Pennsylvania, Montana, California, Wyoming (!!!) and New Zealand met to print virtually. Can it be more fascinating?

 

Start the Day

Thought you'd like to see just what I stare at for my day -- me! But not for long. There's already someone in the waiting room. So, the start of Just Silkscreens. I've got screens ready, dyes ready, table cleared and gathered some loose notes. We'll be at it again tomorrow.
 

An Improvement Over Yesterday

Well, I make it and then I break it -- my homework for tomorrow. I took my blob apart and reassembled it. This is not the final set. I've got to move these around at least ten more times till I'm satisfied. And, we'll be doing this at the Textile Center in Minneapolis next month, should you want to have fun with me there.
 

What Necessity Consumed My Day

I've two computers that worked. But one on life support finally died, and the other has amnesia. So, off to replace one, and tomorrow fix the other. It has taken me all day for this, a necessary task. But, I know in the end I'll have two working computers and peace of mind.
 

New Year New Classes

"Well, it was about time for these to show up!" is what I keep hearing. So here is my list so far. There are two more, waiting to get linked in on the website. Fall Will Be Soon

It is time to sit down with my calendar and set dates for Fall classes. They won't be up for another week, but I've a request for "Columns" and another printing class. This is just a little paper collage, an exercise for Columns. There's so much useful direction I can use from it. You might as well.

 

Non Traditional Materials

I'm not sure why we label these as non-traditional materials. Artists have used whatever they want to make art. I need not name names. This detail of my piece "Iodine" started today's workshop exercise looking at incorporating unusual items in a composition. Should be fun to see what happens next.
 

Comparisons

Returning home is a good time to reflect on in-person workshops. I'd never had to compare virtual with in-person until now, and yes, in-person is different. The atmosphere is both close up and distant, and with benefits. I'll be doing more of both types in the fall, and appreciate their differences.

 

Quilt National Gives You a Dozen Ways

I've a piece in this year's Quilt National, an exhibition that opens late May. In August I'll be virtually teaching through Quilt National's website. The three day class is called "A Dozen Ways: Design for Art Quilts" and we learn more than dozen ways to start composition works.  August 17 to 19.

 

Ready to Quilt

With just four sections, each roughly squared off, this became the final composition. I'm using two of my printed half yard pieces, made during classes as demos. They turn out to be quite free and uninhibited. This set is quite nice because of that strike of black.
 

Ready to Print

Getting ready to screen print tomorrow. I've got some prints with rubbings and stencils with parts ready for printing images from screens. That white space will be filled and changed. Nice to leave something for tomorrow.

How I Wish It Was

Photo (that needs credit because I took it from the web) shows the best help a gal could have. Today when I taught a virtual class I was thankful that students couldn't see me toss cut up fabric, demo blobs, and scraps in heaps across multiple tables. I need to find some assistants. They don't even need ties.
