Blob to Beautiful

I had a perfectly fine top that I just did not like. It needed some order, some redistribution, something. So, I cut it into 25 lovely squares and here's the better set. I'll put it together and get it in the queue. By the way, my workshop saw graffiti in the piece, so we're calling it "Skate Park".

Madeline Island For You?

I've never been to Madeline Island, and am thrilled to be asked to teach there. I'll be there with a workshop "The Definitive Print". Consider coming with me, it's a small class, and we'll be able to print day and night! That's worth the trip, certainly. An Improvement Over Yesterday

Well, I make it and then I break it -- my homework for tomorrow. I took my blob apart and reassembled it. This is not the final set. I've got to move these around at least ten more times till I'm satisfied. And, we'll be doing this at the Textile Center in Minneapolis next month, should you want to have fun with me there.

The Blob

Make It & Break It is always fun, surprising fun. I get to work up a piece along with everyone else, just to show the steps involved. This is the part where "the blob" is made before getting cut apart -- the Break It part of the moment. We'll get together Thursday, I'll have more then. Design Camp? Yes.

Back to the Past

Ten days ago I posted a crumpled "first quilt". It wasn't one I made, or had in my family, but the first I purchased on my route from Minnesota to Rochester, NY in 1981. The pattern is "Ocean Waves", probably made after 1930. I'll be back in Minneapolis April 17 - 21; lecture April 20. Check The Textile Center for details.  https://textilecentermn.org/product/gta-pat-pauly-april2023/

Chalk It Up

I'm assembling a large work, and placing some areas to be set in. A few years back I was given a box of tailor's chalk. It's become a favorite tool to help locate, join, figure out the settings. You can see the faint white line around the "blocks" I want to piece in.

Made in New York

Opening tonight was the Made in New York exhibit at the Schweinfurth Art Center in Auburn, New York. Many very good pieces here, so I'm in good company. This is "The Apple Doesn't Fall Far" and is a whole cloth print. Fiber was in great acceptance in this show, and a pleasure to see.

Color Test

Sometime the color seems so rich that I swear it is not thoroughly washed out and will run when wet. So, I'll take a edge and sew a white cotton layer with a cotton batting layer between with white thread, and wet it down with water. When dry, if there's no wicking through, it won't run.

Dryer Results

Demos and some printing from last week is finally getting in and out of the wash. The colors are so vibrant I'm wondering if living in the gray last days of winter had anything to do with this. I've still a good dozen to finish, some are from December!

Spring?

I'm plenty fine to wait to get spring cleanup underway. I've too much still to tackle in the studio. Good think I don't see these as I come and go from the back door. Then I'd have to clean them up!

The Return

It took a while, and a few distractions, but I've finally back for a few daylight hours to work on this. There are parts I really do like, and the others I'll just have to wrestle with. But that's the fun, right?
