AKG and Stanley Whitney

Big, bold, colorful, sectioned, repetitive, abstract, high-chroma -- what else can be said? The retrospective of Stanley Whitney's work took up the entire third floor of the new Albright-Knox Art Gallery, now known as AKG, and connected his early sketches to these later paintings. Did I want to piece these? You bet.

Is there a good reason for the name change to AKG? Feels like a texter's abbreviation. Did you like the exhibit? Yeah, it was AKG, IMHO.

    1. I'm not in favor of the name change, but someone had that idea, got it through, and there we are. The exhibit was nice, but I wasn't moved. Seemed like a slow progression for 40 years.

    1. These painting were all based on a grid structure he worked with for decades. The 'sashing' was a part of the design, and so that's what we quilters see in them. You're right to see that too.

The best thing about the AKG is the glass bridge around the old trees.

    1. I remember that the Rochester Museum and Science sighted an addition around a mature beech tree. It lasted about 10 years. Next time I'll take a closer look at the walkway and trees at AKG
