Taking Make it & Break It to the streets of San Diego and this group of intrepid piecers took on the challenge. We'll do more tomorrow, after a good rest tonight. Improv at its best, with lots of fun mixed in.

New Forms New Forms
I'll be leaning on my images from the garden this week to set a few new motifs to print next week. The strong forms, the odd bend of the stalk, and the mix of leaves is a wonderful start for cutting new shapes to print.

Murals for a Sun State
I'm not a fan of murals. They are frequently too serious for my taste, grim, or hyper real. This application was just fun, bright, and the right scale. Seen on my drive around town today, another treat to add to my collection of "what world is this?".

The Other Coast
Leaving behind the east coast seemed difficult for about 30 minutes. Just enough time to remove my down vest, whip off my cashmere sweater, and adjust my eyes to the glow of clear skies and a grand vista. I'll be here in the land of succulents, and taking lots of notes on plant forms for motifs. And more.

Day of Rest
..and packing. I'm resting up for the flights ahead of me tomorrow, and I'll miss the warmth of the fire, but I'm promised warm days, sun, and some new museums to visit. All fun, even during work, and I'll still have plenty of winter to return to later next month.

Wolf Moon
Who's howling? I'm not howling? It's the precursor to the total eclipse (April 8) that was on my mind when I had to pick up this sugar spill. It's the small images we keep that inform the things we make.

It's Packing Time Again
San Diego's printing workshop starts February 5, and these will travel with me for the class. Yes, measuring cups, tape, and hot glue gun. Isn't that what everyone packs? It'll be a fun break from this gray winter weather.

The Aha Moment
Second day of the Line, Shape, Setting workshop had me trying my best to use WORDS to describe abstract construction concepts. Using 'blocks' from another project, to cue adding larger pieces to them, resulted in this quick sketch. It made sense, it clicked, and I'll keep it.

This Unglamorous Mess
The second half of the Line, Shape, Setting virtual workshop is tomorrow. I've got a wall of parts, and at this point, it's not drivable. But it'll get some gas, a new set of wheels, and a tuneup. We'll see how it goes after the class. Definitely needs some shift work.

It's Cold Out
After hanging out with a great group from Manitoba for a virtual class, I'm gonna chill by the fire. Yes, there is homework, but chocolate, an instant fire, and my laptop is all I need. It's winter, remember?

Packing
In a week I'll be off to San Diego for a two day class in Make It & Break It. This four patch is made of four 24" squares. And being unconnected, there's lots of ways to set this before it's finished. That's the fun of this design, its ability to morph and change until the sweet spot appears. I'll pack it to go.

Washout
Last day of class for Printing Under the Influence. I've been washing out the prints I did, some are fine as is, some will be cut apart into sections and interspersed among others. I did find a screen that I will use again and again, like the dots I love. And the botanicals remain a favorite, so that's the continuation.

Splayed Out
Trying to get some silk scarves printed for my excursion in a week or so. Thought you'd like to see how I find room to hang them between two hangers on my clothes line. The pins keep them from sliding. And yes, splayed is operative word.

Shadows and Plants
I ask folks who are in the Printing Under the Influence class to note natural forms that inspire and influence. I noticed the shadows in the snow last night, and see next to that photo was a process shot of a print. Hadn't connected them before, and these 'balls on sticks' must be on my radar.

Pick Your Favorite
I make up little ads, you might call them, and post them on Instagram and Facebook every now and again. So, now you know some of where I'll be. There are a few more - San Diego, Columbus, Juneau, Tahoe - to name a few, so check the www.patpauly.com/calendar if you ever wonder what else is going on.

In Process
Two examples of my homework to lay down motifs, then finish, taking process photos midway and after washout. Can't say they are my favorites, but are great in parts, which is all I strive for in any yard I print. And yes, there are a couple of rough spots. But again, I'll cut them out. Joy of editing!

California Here I Come, Soon
Just to let you know that I'm real, and my works are real, I'll be giving a real lecture in San Diego on Saturday, February 3rd, at 5:00 pm. I haven't been to this Museum, or San Diego for that matter, so all will be new to me. Join me if you're around. Registration is through the Visions Museum website.

Gallery Opening
An exhibition of four artists with the theme of "earth" opened tonight. They were in various media, various sizes, and differing techniques. All mixed, perhaps 3" between, and packed in the gallery with no labels and no wall text. I'm trying to comprehend the reasoning for the installation. I'll have to sleep on it.

Three Little Maids From School
There are assignments in the Printing Under the Influence workshop, and I try to do them as well. These are demo prints made from silkscreen day. My challenge is to record my progress. Here's the start, and I'll finish them and show you what I did. By the way, you should see what the others do, it's fab.

Memory Lane
I gave a talk today to a group in Muskoka, Canada. Part of the lecture had me going through history of my work, what I was doing along the way, and this image came up. For a year I wrapped my front yard tree in a piece of printed fabric I made. Each day, rain, sun, sleet, ice. What a year, right?

Yesterday
Well, thought if I'd shared over 4,500 posts with you all, my blog family, I would be remiss if i didn't share that this little boy can now be called 'grandson'. So, here you are. Now there are two grandchildren to love. You can all be aunties and uncles if you wish.

Lights are Still On
A few parts of the northeast are having strong winds and outages. So far, all good. I've a lot to do, need that electric. Stay safe, all.

My Exotic Life
So, gallery hopping one day, washing screens the next. Getting ready for virtual printing class, and it's a full house. With about 3 dozen screens surrounding me, there are still not enough. I'll clean off some 'expendable' ones so I've got clear screens to add resists. Never enough, never.

Recon Mission
The Dove Project in Geneva, New York, has a lovely gallery. An opening today of Maureen Church's landscapes was the excuse for my small quartet to 'case' the place for our show this summer. Arthur Dove, noted painter, lived and worked in this building during his career. More later.

Last Glance
I'm happy this has a new home. Here's a last look at the entire work. I must say that I wanted a bit more time to spend with it. I don't often raw edge machine applique anything, but this yearly series has been a good way to experiment and change. I'll start earlier next year to spend more time with it.

First Friday
The portrait exhibit, a yearly extravaganza, opened tonight in Studio 402, the floor above my studio. I nipped in to see it, check my piece (just to the right in this pic) and learned later that it has been sold. So, a good night for me! Works will be up next First Friday as well, so if you're in Rochester, NY, go.

Progress
I've turned the corner on this piece. The mid-section was fairly muddy, and this is a clearer resting place, a kind of 'eye of the storm' perhaps. I've got little time in the next month, so it will sit and fester awhile. But on return, my hope is that it'll look new. Tomorrow is First Friday, see for yourself.

Totality Eclipse Preclipse
I change the pinwall each time I'm in in the studio. Time for me to start thinking about the total eclipse of the sun that will take place here in Rochester on April 8. I might save this for the Open House for First Friday. Join me 6-9 this Friday. Studio 301, Anderson Arts Building, Anderson Ave corner Goodman.

Waiting in the Dugout
The wall to the left of my main pinwall holds things that catch my fancy. But here, this composition has become a force to be reconned with. It's clear imagery, bold color, and divisions make the 'thing' on the other wall seek counsel. Which I must do.

Start New
New Year's day, a great time to start again. I've got a selection of pieces, some are already getting sewn together in 'blobs' and will start to travel around the design wall. It'll take more time to get it to settle into a composition, but I've got all year!
