In my early teens I learned to sew. I remember reading the instructions to mark points like darts, joins, or locations using thread, and not just a pin or pencil mark. I think you would even pass a needle through the points to match. The skirt of the 'big dress' needed those marks, so, yes, I did that.
I learned these, too, as tailor's tacks. Yours look a little different, no dangling tails that get pulled out so easily. I still use these, when I just can't get that waxed tracing paper to work...
