White Stay White

Washout for hand dyed prints is a long discussion. With help of astute and kind students, and their advice, I get great whites. These three yards have strong blue and black and a clear white. One large, long cold wash, one medium warm, one large very hot (150 degree). With constant agitation, and that's all.

  1. Are these 3 washes in a washing machine or by hand? I am so frustrated not being able to get back to white on my hand-dyed prints, so I'm eager to try this. My lovely old washing machine recently died, and my new top-loader is much harder to work with for dyeing, as the cycles can't be messed with. Any suggestions welcome!

    1. We could write volumes on washing out. This is a simple Speedqueen 300 top loader. I load three yards worth in a large load. I might have handrinsed in cold the darkest one, just a few times as the washer was filling with cold. But not usually. Then dump in the washer to agitate with the others.
