Tonight was vendor night at QSDS and my students, wonderful people that they are, stopped at my table and compliment me -- as well as purchase some of my yards of fabric. We had fun, was rewarded with ice cream, and made it home to rest up for tomorrow.
Contemporary Art Quilter Pat Pauly's random thoughts and excursions made public.

The Start of the Day
It all looks so neat and tidy. Not at the end of the day. We've already gone through this much thickened dye and print paste. But it's all good and there's now more than 40 yards of great printed fabric ready to wash out.

Start With Dark
Somehow I think of Paula Kovarik when I see this. She draws fantastic creatures in her works. These are printed, but same planet, I think. I'll show this one to my class this week at QSDS and see what then see.

Tolerate This
I will not tolerate one bit of your whining about the amount to pack until you hear me while about the amount to pack. This is not even half way there. Let's hope the return is less. Please. QSDS tomorrow.

Loop Around the Hood
There's a Louis Kahn designed church a block away from me, and so I swung by to see what was in bloom. I know that the walks around the Columbus College of Art are lovely, but my neighborhood is pretty keen. Plus I'll gonna miss all my peonies, poppies and false indigo. Not the weeds, though.

The Blob That Will Visit Columbus
The QSDS weekend class will be Make It & Break It. This will be my working demo on how to break it into segments. The hardest part is picking the fabric, and I won't see this for a while. Packing it for then!

Make It & Break It
Two days of great company for a workshop in improv piecing and composition. The online class is the last until the fall/winter season, and I'll be taking this class on the road at QSDS for the weekend June 4-5. and one of the few in-person piecing classes for me this year, and I'm so looking forward to it.

Been A While
As I was cleaning my shelves, I came across this piece of handdyed fabric. I remember adding my name to the edge, and now don't add a thing. Seems a long time, then not. I still sell fabric, yes, but on my website. Those who know are tempted.

Make It & Break It
This week is my last virtual class until the fall/winter season. I'll be teaching Make It & Break It for QSDS, and am already comparing the pros and cons on how the information is seen. Virtually, it's quick to add a short slide show with progress shots. Oh, well, can't have it all. And, live is live.

The Last Thing
The last of five small works that will be at QSDS is getting its sleeve sewn on tonight. Then I'll have to decide which to donate to the live auction (Fridays) and which to exhibit for sale. But five will travel to Columbus with me.

The Next Best Thing
One more that'll hop in the suitcase to ride to QSDS in a week. It is marginally pieced, but heavily quilted. And, I'll teach anyone in my printing workshop just how I do this. Either week, for sure. Columbus, Ohio is where the symposium will be.

Another Thing
One more little (2 x 2) work for QSDS's needs. Can't say if this will be for exhibit and sale (proceeds are split between artist and QSDS) or will head to the auction at the end of each week. Stay tuned.

Next Thing
Finished with the second little piece for QSDS. At 2' square, it packs a lot of surface design techniques -- silkscreen, monoprint, direct drawing, and scraped color. There is also a bit of thin line added just to offer a scale difference and a shape. Why not.

One Done
You'd think this was big big. But it's just 24" x 24". QSDS asked for small works for their little exhibition, and this one will be for sale. Unless it goes in the auction set. I'll see when I've got the five I need.

What's That Mess?
I've started to make the small works for the exhibit at QSDS. Two will become auction pieces, three for exhibit and sale. No worry, they will sort themselves out. And no fighting when I leave the room, you hear?

Unanticipated
Today didn't go as planned. This piece lines up perfectly when I hung it. As though I wanted it to extend this rectangle to the switch. But, as demonstrated by family trying to flyout today, sometimes flights don't align, and what is planned doesn't happen. They're a lesson here somewhere. You can't predict!

Lunar Eclipse
If you are lucky enough, you've seen the moon full out, and then notice that a bit was taken out. Yes, a lunar eclipse of a super moon tonight. Skies were clear, moon brilliant, till it was not. Never anticipate what you think ordinary. It will surprise and stop you.

Dye Delivery
Can't print without dye. So the mega load was delivered. I purchase from Pro Chemical and Dye in Fall River, Massachusetts. The delivery is one or two days. So, now I'm ready for a two week stint at QSDS. My plan is to mix enough for the first day just to get a jump on setting up.

Rolling Along
No, these aren't toilet rolls for the next pandemic wave. These are four rolls of five hundred meters of pfd cotton. Somehow last order of 300 went without blinking. So, it was time to add to the stash. Each class I teach takes 15 yards myself. I've counted about 8 classes so far before winter.

Art Show
St. John Fisher College in Rochester has a new campus gallery. This time it's showcasing regional artists with the clever title "Earth Without Art is Just Eh". So, get ready for landscapes and nature. Always happy to see the talent here.

Plant Based Diet
Another whole cloth has demanded I put it into a piece all by itself. The nerve of these Prima Donnas!

Might Just Take It
I'm looking at a space dedicated to just making textile art. Might just go for it. Gotta sleep on it though.

Back to Screens
I've had so much fun silk screening today. I am just about unpacked from teaching last week, and the screens are getting a new set of circles with hot soy wax. I bought a set of inexpensive brushes to use for that purpose.

To Market To Market
It's hard to overstate the gem that we've got in the Rochester Public Market. For about 6 Sundays they run "Flower Days" there. Today was the opening. I managed to exchange cash for pots. And this week I'll start to get the yard ready. I printed fabric as well, but this came first.

Remind Me
Remind me to edit the materials list. There are fewer and fewer items we need for printing class. Easiest for me to find are the quart containers from my daily yoghurt. Hardest to find (without breaking the bank) are the long handled spoons. And a couple of stencils. That, too.

Case for a Traveler
The exhibition from Joe Cunningham's Gallery in San Francisco returned to me. Easiest way was to leave a case and FedEx it back. Just three days, and there we are. Now to unpack, restore, and relax. Always good to know they're safe. Thanks, Joe, for having my work.

Waving in the Wind
Day three was our last day for printing, and it really could have gone for weeks. But this was just a taste of printing possibilities. We covered a lot of ground, and my guess is that all returned home for a good sit and ponder, preferably with some good food and drink. Thanks Quilt North, it was swell!

Yin and Yang
Both print stations produce wonderful colorful work, but they differ in how the artist decides to organize their print table. Neither better than the other, both function to get a print made, and my guess is that each artist if happy to be doing the printing just the way they like it.

Plenty of Room to Explore
We're just getting started here at the Elks Lodge in Clifton Park with the Quilt North Guild. Happy to include our guests from the Carolina and Ontario, Canada. Definitely working in tremendous color, trying out techniques, and just learning new ways to print fabric. What's not to love?

I Guess They Liked It
Quilt North took a break after my lecture to see what I had brought tonight. Guess they liked the works. And one person is showing her phone with three pieces she's had for YEARS that she can't yet cut into! We've got to change that! They are no use unless used.

Early Sign of Spring
After a day of prepping for the workshop I took a few hours to help my daughter plant seedling trees. Her hillside has a cluster of Bloodroot. I had that plant once but had to leave it behind in a move. Seems it's followed my family and is with us again. That's what happens; something left reemerges.
