On View at View in Old Forge

Mummy Bag Influenced is set and ready for Friday's preview at View in Old Forge, New York. Quilts Unlimited opens Saturday, and many other works will be part of the offering. I'll be doing the lecture Saturday morning before the luncheon. If you are nearby, stop in to see this exhibit.

Hicks and Low Relief

Sheila Hicks "Bas Relief Panel", 1988, was on view on my recent visit to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. In their contemporary craft section, I found this piece so quilterly, with patterning like any block. But it is embroidered, bleached linen. Guess I was fooled.

On Ice

I am on ice for a couple of days with a slight torn meniscus repair. All will go well and I look forward to hiking in a couple of months. Meanwhile, just a short stint on crutches, then should be up and walking fine, and will be in Old Forge, New York, to speak Saturday morning. Next week I will be off to Ohio.

Holy Pumpkin

Might be good that these mice are out of focus. Too clear a picture, and you wouldn't want to come trick or treating at my house.

At Ease With Itself

Carol Trice is standing with her piece in the Quilts=Art=Quilts show. This is not a formal shot; I like how it shows the scale of the work, with Carol. And it looks like her -- clean, simple lines, at ease with itself. The quilted line is tight, manic, and pastel. A surprise at close-up range.

Honorable Night

Pink Leaf 4 (Yellow) is up at the Schweinfurth, and the Quilts=Art=Quilts opened tonight. I recieved honorable mention for my piece, and it is in absolutely perfect company. Judy Kirpich took the top honors and well deserved.

At What Price

One could write a book about how to price artwork. These quilts were finished and hanging in the New England Quilt Museum with dangling price tags. Always remember that the artist takes home the asking price minus the commission. Then, if they are ethical, pays income tax on that. Makes me wonder.

Modern? Contemporary?

Keep this in mind when you need that descriptive label. Now replace it with modern. Maybe post-modern? This is by Maurizio Nannucci in neon (natch) and hangs at the Boston Museum of Fine Art.

New England and New Quilts

Stopped in yesterday to view the "Roots of Modern Quilting" at the New England Quilt Museum in Lowell, Massachusetts. I was expecting to see the quilts that started the movement of the current contemporary quilts, but I forgot that the "Modern" was in the title. Stay tuned.

The Glass Man Cometh

Here is a tower of green pointy things by Dale Chilhuly at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Nice to see this in natural daylight. Still, how do you keep this dust free?

They are the Tops

Before my lecture tonight for the Quilter's Connection, these quilters did some showing off of their own. And check out my lovely "living room" set. The best place to speak, for a million reasons.

In-A Great Workshop

Another shot from Saturday's workshop, Ina repositions her fabrics to continue "slash and burn". What a fun day, with a great group. Kinda liking hanging around them.

Workshop Foolings Around

My sweater has wound up as fabric for Susan's piece. Good thing she did not have a rotary cutter in hand. Fun at the Watertown, Massachusetts workshop today. Looking forward to doing it again with another great group.

Dye Pots Cookin'

Monday night is a lecture in Watertown, Massachusetts. I cooked up a batch of newly dyed fabric, just in case there was nothing here in town for people to use. Tomorrow is a workshop, as well as Sunday. And it is a full house of Connecting Quilters.

Backyard Leaves

My new backyard has a chain link fence that backs to a concrete wall, that beyond is a major expressway. So, pleasent surprise to see this vine doing a proper fall show. Lets see if I like the concrete wall when these have fallen.

Be Leaf This

I am painting direct gooey printpaste and dye on soda-soaked fabric. Just a test, to see what I can do with it. I need to make some large leaves. Might work.

'Splain Me This

Why is it that each and every new pile of something must be inspected? Let me tell you, I would only leave MY stuff strewn about, yours would have to be put out of reach.

Off For Raffle

The Schweinfurth holds a silent raffle each time they hold the Quilts=Art=Quilts show, and this is my donation for them. Most of the hand stitching I did while hanging out in a lovely hotel in Montreal, so it is called just that -- Montreal.

House Work

Some days I call a "house work" day, and I spend my energy tackling a needed project. Here is my trusty tile cutter and a pile of white subway tiles bits. The first floor shower is getting its needed finish, and I have about 80 square feet of tile to get through. I can already see more trips to Home Depot in my future.

Small Sketch

Standing about 3 feet high, this maquette explores the color, shape, texture and line for the larger work I have scheduled. Not quite hitting the mark, so I will start another small sketch before starting the large one.

Tropical Sight

Think you are in Florida? Think again. This is today's array at the mall in Victor, New York. In a couple of weeks we will have a freeze and it is all over. Till next summer. Then we are looking balmy again.

More Glass

So if you thought you had a bad hair day, consider it just inspiration for this glass sculpture on view at the Montreal Fine Arts building. And hope that some low flying bird doesn't want to nest.

More Chilhuly

My friend Nancy captured this group of neon filled glass at the Chilhuly show in Montreal. These lines speak to me, and I love seeing them in another medium.

Jane as a Teenager

Another surprise from this weekend's quilt show outside of Ithaca, in Dryden, New York. A descendant of the Dear Jane series, this quilt kicked it brighter and more fun. And the title reflects that.

Quilting Close-Up

Aafke made this quilt while in my class from large scale Merimekko printed fabric. This detail shows the well thought out quilting stitch that brought out the forms of the fabric. The colors are wonderful and bright.

Gone Fishin'

Part of the Tompkins County Quilt Guild Show included a section of vintage and contemporary signature quilts. This little detail appeared on one of the crazy quilts. Charming. And matched the action in the "Largest Northeast Fishing Derby" in Pulaski I passed on Friday.

Hanging Around Dryden

The Tompkins County Quilt Guild has their biennial show in Dryden, New York (just a stone's throw from Ithaca) and I am in good company. My work is the extreme left and is now captured by some unknown admirer. Not copied, I hope.

So Much Fabric for Little Block

Answer why we need piles of fabric to make that 6" block? This is paper piecing and definitely the laid-back method. Hey, fun is part of the equation -- not measure, twist, turn, fold, crease, flip, sew, iron, trim, turn around, shake, wiggle, and roll.

In the Garden near Montreal

Suzanne is working out her block for the In the Garden quilt at my class in Beaconsfield, near Montreal, Quebec. Sun, warmth, great company and lots of laughs for this early October day.

Chilhuly at Montreal

This evening's side trip was to see the Dale Chilhuly exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts in Montreal. Lots of glass, lots of color, lots of pattern. But an affordable chandelier? No. Tomorrow Ikea.

Big Leaf North of the Border

Suzanne brought her Big Leaf to show and tell tonight at the Beasonsfield Quilt Guild meeting. What great (and swell looking) folks. We had a good time, I got a few laughs from my jokes, and enjoyed the "quilts spoken here" attitude. Tomorrow morning we meet again.
