Comb Over

Actually, more like a brush-off. I found a short bristled wallpaper brush is perfect to smooth the backside of my monoprint. I've got thickened dye on a sheet of plexi, and silkscreened circles, too.

Chores

Mow the lawn, check. Weed the garden, check. Hang up soda-soaked linen for tomorrow's printing, check.

Moon Standin

This moonflower will have to fill in for August's end, unlike last year's full moon. My submission for Quilt National is in, and I'm turning my attention to other work. This bloom will be gone by morning.

Friends at the Gallery

It was an opening last night at Main Street Arts Gallery in Clifton Springs for an invitational print show. I went to see how six artists use printing to compose and transform. These women took it all in, and confirm looking at art is better when you can trade notes with a friend.

Photography

Had I means, I would hire out the photography. A lampstand is a birchbark lamp base, the tripod (circa 1975) marks the middle of the work, and lights are clipped to the joists overhead. Cropping makes the method is invisible.

A Man, a Pnal, Panama

Work goes on, albeit slowly, building the left orange side of the latest work. Funny how it seems random when finished, but shifting and replacing  to get there endless.

Plywood Plywood

Sam Gillian's work Fishing Well has painted surfaces on plywood. The constructed quality and the overlapping forms reminds me of the improvisational works I love. Seen here (on right) tonight at the Memorial Art Gallery with loads of newly placed works.

Maybe This, Maybe That

Moving, cutting, rearranging. Might as well do that for a while. It's what people think I do, anyway. This time, yes. Other times, no.

Joyful Meeting Tonight

Amid the interpretive dance, the song, and the witty "room boxes," there was this embroidery from Carol Reeves for the "What I Do When I'm Not Quilting" program at the Tompkins County Quilt Guild tonight. Me? I was speechless.

Oh, Well

This is not the first rejection I've been handed. So, it's time for some self pity, a bowl of ice cream, and tomorrow, back to the drawing board. I'll be curious to see Q=A=Q, and who is in my spot!

Glass and Gold

Olivia Kim explained that her glass head was made with gold that shared the same ability for light reflectivity as the glass. Or, that is how I remember it. I admit to not paying attention, to just be in awe that the process was so complex, and the art so appealing. This at Sonnenberg Arts in the Garden.

Closing Time

The end of a lovely, albeit hot and stormy day, at the Art in the Garden at Sonnenberg  Gardens today. I was one of four judges, and saw each of the 102 artists. The tents are closed for the night, and tomorrow will reopen with to do it all again.

Numbering the Rows

Years ago, while watching Alex Anderson, I learned her tip for numbering rows with just a couple of pins. Placed in the upper left corner, they were roman numerals, and the stacks will wait for me to return.

Sturgeon Moon

A lunar eclipse tonight, and the Sturgeon Moon is caught best from my front yard. Time to reflect on the year, as we see the end of August around the corner. Time to look back, then ahead, to new starts.

Finished and On the Wall

After seeing it in parts for so long, its great to see the latest put together and ready for company. You know you're finished when you have the sleeve sewn on!

Foolin Around

I had seen a new method for making half-square triangles, and couldn't keep myself from taking a detour (from my next piece) and trying out the process. Love it! And it would be fun to get a class together to share this. I make the squares in almost no time, and I don't have to cut triangles.

Garden Walk

Alling DeForest's garden design was finished in 1904 for George Eastman's house. Even with oppressive heat, and little rain, the garden is cool and green, and needed this mid-August between stitching and facing.

Art, Other

Abelardo Morell, a Cuban born American photographer, has two works on view at the George Eastman Museum on Photography and the National Parks. They blew me away, both for the technique, and the way the image was layered. If I could have taken one with me, I'd pick his.

Get Out and See the Hydrangeas

Last week was a garden tour, and these hydrangeas seemed to emit their own light. I love the tall spike of a tree in the distance. I like this composition just because it feels like a reversal of value-- dark for light, light for dark.

Call Me Pat

I've got a collection started here. And I do grab one from the bowl now and again, just to stand there and be me.  Best thing, they spell my name correctly.

Crank Up the Air Conditioner

I've got a window AC unit, and because of that, I look forward to sewing the facing on this next work. For breaks, I'll run out and water the garden. A simple life, indeed.

On the Wall

Thank goodness I didn't sell these couple of prints. They'll make the start of the next piece, although right now they aren't saying much.

Under the Needle

I am acutely aware of how my work is devoid of critical pressure. What I do, how I do it -- is all without life or death consequences. Just think of the phrase "under the knife" and its difference to "under the needle."

Joys of Bleach

Hadn't occurred to me that layers and layers would surface when using different bleaches and at different times. It's compellingly complex, but easy to make. This from Saturday's discharge day.

Perspective

Tonight was movie night, and "Death in Venice" the serving. So, thoughts of where and how to spend your life, mixed with how and where to end you life, were there for chewing on. Not all of life is symmetrical and ordered, like this vista. Askew might happen as well.

Work Day / Play Day

Two groups, the Peeps and the Divas, met today at Bev's house to do some discharge and try printing with textile paints. Yards and yards were bleached, stamped and printed. What a way to spend the perfect breezy August day, and return home with a pile of fascinating cloth.

End of the Night

Thanks to City Newspaper for adding a note on my show, we had waves of people all night for First Friday. I didn't grab my camera till the place was near empty, save for this lad and his game of tennis ball pool.

Tomorrow's First Friday is Me

My work at NU MVMNT, a fitness studio, is featured in the First Friday offerings for Rochester's gallery night. Stop in at 716 University Avenue 6 - 9. The entrance is the backside of the building on University. Today Deborah Massie Boschert visited just to make sure I was on my game.

Paired Down

Evolution, I find, becomes editing. Take away, take away, take away. I'm liking what remains.

Old Dye Days

I'm getting ready to do some discharge this weekend, and so make up some dark fabrics with old dyes, (few years on the shelf) trying to experiment with dark color changes. I'll also use these fabrics to stamp with textile paint. That shipment is due tomorrow.

Movin and Groovin

Back to the design wall today with a bunch of the prints I've been stacking for just this occasion. Haven't settled yet, and there is a lot of movin to do. But, I like the beginning.
