Water Scape

Passing through the Cornell Plantations is a bridge and I took this view looking down. I love the strip of dark, and the blobs of color "floating" above. Eager to translate this to fiber. Yes. Next week, when I get home.

No Ordinary Swamp

A visit to Cornell's renowned Lab of Ornithology will have this lovely swamp on view from inside (and here outside) the building. This shot does not do the twilight hour justice. But, this was the camera's limit and the photograher's ability.

Oh, to be in Venice

What? A Pauly Glass chandelier in Venice? Well, let's hope some they were some distant relatives. This chandelier would certainly have a home with me. Thanks to Sandra for this great temptation. No, I have not been to Venice recently (sigh).

Grand View

The Atheneum Hotel in Chautauqua overlooks the lake. What a grand view from a very grand old hotel. Built in 1881, it has aged gracefully. We can take a lesson here.

Palestine at Chautauqua

Safed, looking down on the Sea of Galilee in a real-life diorama of Palestine on the grounds of Chautauqua Institution makes anyone scratch their head in wonder. The lake serves to represent the Mediterranean, with the river Jordan there as well. Here is a link to the ancient map: http://www.thenazareneway.com/map_of_ancient_palestine.htm . This earth sculpture has been her since forever, or maybe since the 20s. It is way cool.

Fabric on the Rack

My set up at Chautauqua, with fabric, fabric, fabric. All my hand-dyes, and some shibori. Now some gone to new homes. Quilting Around Chautauqua was way more interesting than I thought it would be and certainly something to write home about.

Being 16 Again

Jewett House was a scholarship dorm at Chautuaqua Institution when I was 16. That was an enlightening summer, this was home base, my room on the third floor. I was a student in the painting school. Now I am returning (as part of Quilting Around Chautauqua) to see my old haunts and sell painted fabric. Ha.

Cutting the Pretty Fabric

Jenna is here cutting up that shibori fabric she bought from ME last June. Yes, it can be done! Just hold your breath, watch your fingers and cut. My quilt is in the background. More to sell this weekend in Chautauqua, New York.

Fabric on the Go (Post #101!)

Fabric is pressed and ready to go tomorrow to Quilting Around Chautauqua. This event has quits, entertainment, and of course wonderful vendors -- like me! Stop in and say that you saw this post, mention the number (101) and I will take off $5 from your sale of my fabric. What a deal!

Garden Finds

I was told this was a flowering maple. Huh? Well, I looked it up and sure enough, it is a plant native to Brazil. Called a Chinese Paper Lantern plant. This from my friend's garden in Fairport. Lovely. Reminds me of my shibori fabric.

Never Met a Puddle She Didn't Like

Montreal is the scene where a week ago there was a water main break down the campus at McGill. Why does this matter? Cause that is my girl in the foreground frolicking. Must have done something right when we raised her.

Marathon Mile 16

By Mile 16 you would have crossed these two great gals who were very fun. On my route out of the neighborhood, this stop crossed the path of the Rochester Marathon. No siting of Rob. Must have been too fast...

Jungle Plants Nearby

This amazing garden is in the local strip plaza. I am a sucker for big leaves, and this is just what I needed to see. It is tremendous, and if you are near Pittsford Plaza, take a stroll with your camera -- it is like wow.

Discharge Like You Mean It

Marcia Murphy tackles a large piece (why be small?) to discharge. Might be cut apart to be part of a great tote bag. Who knows? Part of day #2 fun in the studio.

Discharge Day

It was a blast to get together with friends today and try out discharge paste. I screened it on my hand-dyed fabric, and let dry. Ironing brought out the "bleaching out" properties of the paste, and now I have more fuel to fire up some art quilts. Many thanks to our fearless leaders Nancy and Marcia, and to Marcia (#2) for hosting us.

Dyeing for Chautauqua

In a couple of weeks I will be off to the Quilting Around Chautauqua show to sell fabrics. This shibori (fancy term for tie-dye) piece is packed and ready to go. So, that's what I have been doing these last two weeks.

Sol Lewitt Au Natural?

See, even nature can't avoid that "from the vortex" feeling you get from an installation of Sol Lewitt's work. And this reminds me -- time to SPRAY FOR DEER!

Sol LeWitt last year

Seen at Mass Moca, this installation work from Sol LeWitt's designs is far and away crazy. I loved the show, we saw it a year ago, and it still is a great memory for line, color, fun, and he knew how to write some grand instructions. If there is an installation near you, you are lucky.

Exhibit Design

At the art festival yesterday here in Rochester, was a very clever use of stretched canvas with a field of paint to highlight snazzy jewelry. I love the black and white of these gals as well. Sorry I did not catch the artist's name.

At the Clothesline Art Festival

Clothesline has been an annual event in Rochester, New York for the last 53 years. Back in the 80s I had a booth and sold quilts. It still has a great saturation of well made and high end craft as well as very good art. Never disappointed with what is there. This fiber work is by Raphaela McCormack who currently has an exhibit at Nazareth College. Check her out.

Togetherness

Good thing this image was not part of the anniversary celebration. But for the Iowa State Fair no problemo and gets a "G" rating.

Projecting an Image

You never know how you look, how you are recorded, what impression you might leave. Best you can do is relax, because there is selective memory at work. And a ton of images that will be sent to the delete folder.

Crazy Hexagons Again

Floor of an outdoor garden at the Botanical Gardens in Montreal uses those hexagons that I love. You have to tour this if you are in Montreal. Vast.

Starting School

For many years, September saw me as a student, then a teacher, then as the mom with the schedule. Now the start of school is a no-brainer. I make sure that everyone has transportation, knows where to buy groceries, and has a working computer. Then I go back to work in the studio. This scene is Montreal, and the start of getting to class. Or something like that.

Upside Down Anniversary

Made this upside-down peach cake to celebrate our 25th anniversary. Fitting to be not "right-side up" and we will celebrate for a few days, weeks, years.

Fun with a Hexagon

Built from hexagonal shapes, this 1808 quilt is full of flowers. Seen in Nebraska at the International Quilt Study Center this August.

Take a Note

Love this cacophony of notes, color just flying in the wind. I saw this in Iowa City a couple of weeks ago. What will ever replace this jumble? Mini touch screens? Ipad chips? Hope this is not a thing of the past.

Canandaigua Lake

At the start of the Labor Day weekend, it was way too hot, and water was a must. The water here was cool, and we managed to find a slight breeze. Great light.

Stalker at Work

Sent in by my daughter, this is the set of cats now in residence. I love the limited pallette of this photo, with the shot of light on the floor. A great composition that I would like to use in a quilt. Might just do that. Oh -- hard to see the cat below, with just his eyes on the target.

Anemone in the Garden

Almost every day I walk the garden at the nursing home I visit. These greet me in the spring, and I love the show they put on for the fall. I can't have this in my garden -- the deer would take them away. Here in this courtyard they are safe and mulch happy.
